Howdy Just thought I would share the current project, which is starting to take shape. This is build number 14. It all started with a StewMac ukulele kit at the outset of the first Covid lockdown, in March 2020. Since then, I have built a further 6 ukuleles, two flat top mandolins and two steel string acoustic guitars. I have had two "did not finish" but I keep them in the sequence to remind myself! This will be Triple O steel string acoustic, with a 25.34 inch scale length. Bunya Pine soundboard, Blackhearted Sassafras back and sides, Blackwood binding, bolt on Queensland Maple neck, Jarrah bridge and fingerboard, River Oak headstock, Lacy Oak rosette. Gotoh 510 tuners. I don't use either an external or internal mould, but prefer free air building on a sort of solera, similar to the approach adopted by Natelson and Cumpiano. Back and top are thicknessed and bracing is largely complete (waiting on some brace wood in the mail for the transverse brace above the sound hole). Next step is to start work on the neck and fingerboard and to thickness and bend the sides.

A very satisfying time of the project - neck and heel blocks attached to soundboard, sides bent, kerfing applied and attached to soundboard, sides profiled for the curvature of the back, and more kerfing applied. Closing the box next, and moving ahead with the neck and bridge.

Thanks Dale. I’m hoping so. I’m still at the very early stages of learning but.I’ve found this forum very helpful and thought that if I contributed a build thread, from a beginner perspective, it might provide some interest while also helping me work through my upcoming challenges!

Gluing Blackwood bindings to the jarrah fretboard. Using a 25.34 inch scale length, zero fret, 44 mm at the nut and 55 mm at the 14th fret. A Makita router and a Stew Mac binding channel jig. Blackwood binding with BWB purfling. Binding and neck joints / angles remain the most stressful part of the build for me. Reasonably happy with the outcome. Time to glue the bindings - using CA glue for a change - and start cleaning up the body, and make some progress with the neck including cutting the scarf joint for the neck, routing the truss rod channel and building the heel.

Further progress on the Triple O 1. Fretboard completed, with abalone dots installed, jarah polished and medium gold frets installed. 2. Queensland mahogany neck prepped, with scarf joint for headstock and a stacked heal. Two way truss rod fitted, and initial rough profile on the bandsaw and sander. Then attached a gidgee headstock veneer, jarah heel cap and the prepared fretboard. 3. Finished initial neck carving, a then bolt it all up to check fit and inspect all the details, prior to thorough sanding in preparation of applying shellac finish.

Great progress bobholbert. Can't wait to see the back and sides under a couple of coats of shellac.

A couple of coats of shellac for sealing - and to start to see the colouring. A light sanding and then time to start applying the hardened shellac finish in earnest.

Lovely bobholbert . It's a very 'natural' looking guitar, the wood is really well 'showcased'.
