I have been unhappy with the sound I have been getting recently, when playing vintage rock "n" roll and rockabilly. I use a Gretsch and a LP Junior for this stuff. I am happy with the compression and single slap-back echo effects I am using and a a nice spring reverb too. Where my sound has been failing has been with distortion. I have been attempting to get that very minimal, valve warmth style. Enough to thicken the sound a tad and give it a little edge but not enough, to make definition and clarity break up. I know this is a kind of holy grail sound and many people will be very keen to recommend an amp or pedal to acheive the desired effect. Well having previously owned the old Fender Blues Junior combo, I thought this could be the answer. So I went out today, to try out a limited edition, British Racing Green, Blues Junior IV. It was handy that the shop had the same models of guitars that I use, in stock. It didn't take much knob twiddling to realise that this amp would indeed be what I was looking for. The mark IV version sounds fuller and less boxy than the older B.J.s and the real, mechanical spring reverb has been tweaked to perfection. So it came home and I plugged it in, via compression and slap-back delay, to achieve a glorious sound. These amps are old school but very practical. 15 watts is very loud here and the tonal possibilities just work so well. The little one-button footswitch activates the "Fat" switch, which thickens up the mids, to give your sound a boost, that should be enough for solos. This is a no nonsense, class act and I love this colour, too.

Nice I love the colour. I had a blues junior 4 with an eminence speaker. I sold it when I got a cracking deal on a Tone King Gremlin amp. I recently traded a guy for a Fender 58 Champ, which complements the Gremlin. I’m all for low watt amps, keeps the wife and neighbours happy.
