Soundboard braces have been profiled and the final strip of resin/carbon tow applied. I've used a slower curing resin this time so I could get all the carbon tow soaked and layered before it started to gel. Previously I've just done the curved braces allowed the resin to harden then applied resin/carbon to the short straight braces. This resin takes upto 30 hours to harden. Not photographed but the neck has been chanelled for the truss rod and stiffeners, the bridge has been shaped and the fretboard has been crowned and fret slots cut. I've inlayed small diamond shapes for the fret markers. Feet up now till the resin hardens...

A treat to read / see at the end of a busy and stressful day francis. Are you still working on the J45 style guitar too? Dale

Bindings and purflings are in place. Clean-up has started on the body. I can now get a fix on the neck/body angle and think about the neck joint, usually about 2¼° - 2½° but best to check first. We have visitors this week so might be a delay before next posting.

francis - forgive some ignorance: "Soundboard braces have been profiled and the final strip of resin/carbon tow applied." What is the purpose of the carbon tow applied to the top of the braces? I assume it is to add stiffness? What improvement in tone/structure are you looking for? TIA, Peter

That really does look like a work of art francis. Apologies for interrupting your question above Peter. Dale

borborygmus Peter, I like the carbon additions to the top bracing as it allows for bracings to be lighter in cross section and the extra stiffness allows the top to be thinner too. This adds volume to a small instrument as I think owners will verify. The bracing pattern is also very symmetrical which I've felt gives an evenness to the guitar's range. But that's my thoughts and echo's the comments from owners who've given me feedback on their instruments. I have built with the Falcate brace pattern but without any carbon (increased brace heights). That produces a more mellow sound at a much reduced volume. Francis

This is my cedar/walnut guitar hot off the bench just over two years ago - Everyone who picks it up is always struck by the resonance and potential volume from such a small box! Looking forward to seeing this one completed - some lucky person is going to be well chuffed! Keith

My Milsom J45 has, of course, a larger body than a parlour and can be very loud. However its resonance is also remarkable. Even when strings are at the stage of needing to be changed its sound continues and echoes for much longer than any of my other guitars.
