Hi folks
I'm sure there're a lot of opinions on these. I'm not after those. I'm sure I read about an alternative product that was frequency specific but worked on a similar principle ie vibrated the top via the strings to apparently age a guitars sound. Almost like you could say my B string is a bit weak, focus on that. It all sounds like its probably bollocks to me as until there's a double blind trial that attempts to remove bias (ie I paid a lot so it must work) I'll be incredibly sceptical. However, I digress. Does anyone know of an alternative? And I'm not talking about the cheap Chinese rip offs for £15 on eBay. Nor speakers. Nor just playing the damn thing.
Cheers Mike

Hi Mike,
I’m a sucker for ‘too good to be true’ gadgets, and after almost a year of deliberating, I just got a hold of the Tone Traveler by Dr Herringbone (surely a real doctor).
It’s a speaker and tablet that vibrates the strings at the correct frequency and you can focus on one or more strings.
Only had it a week, so no opinions from me yet, but it’s a nicely made and presented bit of kit.

That’s the one I was thinking about! But had forgotten. Thanks. Seems we may both be in the sucker camp…..

Did someone mention Snake Oil? Isn't that the stuff you rub into the guitar and it inhales the tone? Do you know where I can get some?

Did someone mention Snake Oil? There seems to be a misspelling. As Martin will know best of all, being somewhat Scottish, what you meant was “S’nae Coil”, which of course is describes a sound device that is unlike a speaker element and which presumably may intone tone.

I use thisMany well-known makers I know use them (Tonrites though), but will never admit to it.

Cheers Mike I found one of the aforementioned £15 rip offs on AliExpress and decided to try it out. Took about a week to arrive and is basically a vibrating plastic box with a dial to control the intensity. I left it on for most of the day yesterday and I think I can hear a difference. It may be an “Emperor’s new clothes” syndrome but as it only cost £15 I don’t think I need that much self justification. Had I shelled out on a genuine ToneRite I’d have definitely heard a difference. I didn’t do a “before” recording to compare properly but feel the tone is richer with more complex overtones. So if you’re curious I’d give one of the cheap ones a go.

I know that back in the day, before Tonrites or their like were manufactured people would sit an aquarium pump on the top and leave it running for days. Supposedly the vibrations would turn a piece of old cardboard into a Torres.
Other versions of vibrating gizmos are available!

Those who favour putting a guitar by a loudspeaker might like to consider playing the following tracks on their sound system -
Good Vibrations - Beach Boys Shake, rattle and roll - probably the Elvis version Bend me, shape me - Amen Corner Shakin' all over - Johnny Kidd and the Pirates I can feel it coming in the air tonight - Phil Collins Vibrations Pt1 & Pt 2 - Black Eyed Peas Hippy hippy shake - Swingin' Blue Jeans And, sadly, anything by Shakin' Stevens
Hope this is helpful. Keith

I'm still using my 'snake oil', and rather think it does do something beneficial.
In fact I've got it on right now, and it's buzzing away quietly. It can be dangerous for your health, it has to be said. I left it on loud the other night and my wife gently suggested that I "turn that f*****g thing off", which I took as a hint that she didn't enjoy the sound.

I borrowed a Tonerite and tried it for three days each on two very different guitars, a brand new luthier built 00 and a 43 year old Fylde. I didn't notice any difference at all after the "treatment".

Here’s an attempt to be a little more scientific although frankly the previous attempt couldn’t have been any less scientific. I also happened to read a proper scientific paper yesterday… EquipmentFurch Yellow OM spruce/rosewood Ali Express ToneRite knockoff AKG P170 and Rode M3 into GarageBand via Scarlett 212 MethodRecord guitar Attach ToneRite, leave on until it goes flat, recharge then on until bed time plus an hour in the morning. About 11 hours in total Record guitar again ResultsHere’s the before and after results app.box.com/s/9vvlki00vqs01aljmhn2k4vqlnmy3qmh
