Hi,
Only recently got back in to Neil Young stuff. Just found this on YouYube and if you have an hour to spare its a great watch. All sorts of top artists doing his stuff (many better than he does ....?).

Sorry to say but I've never really got into Neal Young. I know a couple of his songs but, well as for that genre of music I'm very late to the party. The truth is I like guitar playing, enjoy hearing the instrument being played on its own but am not big on songs.

I've seen Neil Young in various guises, love his music. 1995 (or 96) Reading Festival supported by Pearl Jam, solo acoustic at London Hammersmith, with Crazy Horse in Newcastle, headlining Hyde Park and most recently with Promise of the Real (Lukas Nelson) at the O2 Arena.... although a few years ago now. I have to agree with Peter in general. I enjoyed the video but not sure about most of the covers, except for Ben Harper and Wilco, I liked them a lot and thanks for posting it up

I must admit, having posted this, that I have also found NY an acquired taste and, for some decades only liked (listened to) a very few of his songs. I didn't go with the early rock songs at all (and still don't).
But I came back to him having seen a few covers in open tunings or double drop d/drop d which I'm using a lot more these days and I must say I'm regretting having taken so long to appreciate him.
Yes, some of his lyrics seem to go nowhere and bounce around; Dolly Parton apparently rang him to ask what the lyrics meant of 'After the Goldrush' (which she then recorded with Emmy-Lou H and Linda Rondstat) and got the reply 'Hell I don't know, it depends what I was on at the time'.
And yes, covering his songs can be tricky because of his very high vocal range (for me anyway) and I nearly always have to transpose. And his guitar arrangements vary from very simplistic to very original and clever. Wish I could do the harmonica bits though.
But, having made the effort I find his music extremely rewarding and some of the lesser known tracks like 'Box Car', 'Stringman', 'This Old Guitar', 'Unknown Legend' to name but a few are part of my favourites now. I'm particularly keen on 'Old Laughing Lady' (which I do in Open D) at the moment.
Happy days!

I might be in the minority here, but Neil Young is one of my favourite ever guitarists (both electric and acoustic, he is very versatile). He is not flashy, he is a master of understatement. And he has soul. Check out: Cinnamon Girl, Cortez the Killer, Harvest Moon, Ambulance Blues... I have been a fan (fanboy?) since the early 70's (since my music sentience). My favourite album is Zuma. For a more acoustic experience, the album Comes A Time is good. Note that he has produced some pretty bad records too, in over 50 releases. I like Buffalo Springfield and CSN&Y too. His headline set at Glastonbury in 2009 was the only gig in my reasonably extensive history that I scored 11/10. I enjoyed your list of less known NY tracks, fatfingerjohn - thank you. Peter

Yes, I'm a big fan of his guitar playing too... as you say soulful. On the Beach is my favourite album, I think... probably. An add to the lesser known songs I like is 'Throw Your Hatred Down' from Mirrorball, love 'This Old Guitar' John.
The best cover I have ever seen is Neil Young's a take on 'A Day In The Life', here it is from Glastonbury, just incredible. He played it a few weeks later with Paul McCartney at Hyde Park but I prefer the Glastonbury take.

Was he in the band called America that released the song A Horse With No Name? No, America was Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley. Their first album was one I heard playing in a record shop and had to buy. As it was the only copy the assistant wouldn’t let me have it until he’d finished playing it!

It’s “Harvest” for me. It came out while I was a student and has been part of the soundtrack to my life ever since. Particular favourites are: “Heart of Gold”, “A Man Needs a Maid”, “Old Man”, “Alabama”, “Words” and “The Needle and the Damage Done”. If you aren’t familiar with his music, it’s a good pace to start.

I'm a big fan. He's made so many albums and tried many many different styles that inevitably some are not as good as others. FWIW, my favourite NY albums are Zuma, After The Goldrush, Rust Never Sleeps and, if I'm in the mood, On The Beach. Check him out.
