Hi all, Just got back from a fabulous week of music with the Costa Del Folk in Portugal. I'm attaching a copy of the programme, hoping it's readable here. In summary, we had 5 days of wall to wall music including workshops and performances. The morning was basically for relxed workshops covering Singing Choir, Spoons foe beginners, Ukes (beginners and Intermediate) Song workshops (like circle of death) and and Ensemble of multi instruments. These resulted in a performance on the last day from all of these groups. In the early evening there was a 1 hr 'open mic' which was actually and 'open non-mic' i.e. acoustic only. A fair amount of this was a cappella as many people didn't bring instruments, but the standard was pretty high. I took a guitar as extra baggae and payed each night and also at a couple of the morning sessions. The performing acts started at 11.30 each day with 2 or 3 acts on two stages, each for 40 minutes. Then in the afternoon and evening, on the main outdoor stage, there were a further 5 performances of 45 minutes or 1 hour each, with a break of only 15 minutes between except at 'tea/dinner time'. There were a total of around 15 different performers, most doing 2 separate performances. Hard to pick out the best (for me) as there was so much variation but I'd list as standouts -Ralph McTell, (2 programmes and a 'meet the performer session'). -Phil Beer on his own -Steve Knightly on his own -Track Dogs -Show of hands, joined by Miranda Sykes, and to close the whole thing, Track Dogs, this session being absolutely stunning -Merry Hell (great) -Miranda Sykes on her own (exceptional) Most others were also very good; didn't like 'Fistful of Spookies', although they brought the house down. In the afternoon each day there was a 'meet the performer' session with a 45 minute interview with some of the big names, incuding Ralph McT, Phil Beer, Track Dogs. Everything was outdoors, terrific weather and excellent venue. The hotel was exclusively for this event and, with day tickets also available, there were around 600-800 people there! And for anyone with the stamina (not me!), 3 days had a late night caliedh from 11 to 12.30 followed by a further inpromptu session! Back to the grindstone now, but we've already booked for next year (headline acts Fairport Convention, Midge Ure, Thea Gilmore, O'Hooley and Tidow, Ranagri) . (The Company, 'Harmony Voyages', run about 6 events a year including river crusises (Richard Thompson) and 3 land-based prgrammes overseas and a couple in UK. FFJ Attachments:

What a brilliant time that must have been, John. Next year don't forget to take your own spoons though!
Certainly agree that Miranda is an exceptional singer/musician and adds such a lot to SoH too.

Sounds like a splendid few days. I have friends who went... will catch up with them on Friday.
Miranda is great yes, she also makes jewellery with sea glass & silver. I bought a necklace for my daughter when she played Norwich FC. Multitalented that one!

OK, to set the record straight on which year we are now talking about.😂😂😂 Just got back from Costa Festival 2024 2024 in Portugal. After our first visit last year we wondered whether it would be as good or the novelty would have worn off. No fears, it was excellent. Held over 6 days in a 5 star hotel with tremendous staging facilities and numerous stages/venues on the premises, it's a great setting; and the weather was kind, 24-26 degrees and no rain, outdoor dining every day, swimming pools and beach for those who wanted.
A total of around 30 performances of between 45 and 60 mnutes from around 15-20 acts, tremendous variety. Without mnetioning all names, here's a summary
GREAT! Fairport Convention (2 sets). Midge Ure (a revelation to me doing 1 long set of largely 'acoustic' numbers),brilliant Gary Stewart, doing 2 sets, the highlight a re-creation of the Graceland album, fabulous
VERY GOOD. Ranagri Urban Folk Quartet Thea Gilmore Lost Notes Anthony John Clarke
I've missed out quite a few others who were enjoyable in their own way.
DIDN'T LIKE Scott and Tidow Wilson Family
DREADFUL Red Hot Chilli Pipers. Don't know what possesed the organisers to book this lot who were totally in the wrong environment (can't think what the right one would be othere than a stag night in Ibiza!) To make it worse they were the last act of the event; many people, including us, left before halfway.
As well as the professional performers, there were 'classes' every day for Ukelele, Choir and Ensemble. Plus opportunity for individuals to go to a singaraound 'folk club style' every morning and 'open mic without the mic' every evening. Also available for a small supplement were Water Colour classes every day and Bird Watching trips, plus other excursions if wanted.
Must give a special word to many of the performers who stayed for most of the week, mingled with everyone and some joined in on the 'class' sessions to add support and encouragement. A special word for Dave Pegg of Fairport who gave his time throughout both adding backing to other performers or support to the breakouts.
Another wonderful week; I even managed 5 songs. Booked already for next October where Ralph McTell is top of the bill.

Sounds wonderful, John. Glad you got to sing as well - did you do your brilliant dementia song? How refreshing to hear that the open mic was actually an open!

JScott & Tidow? I’ve heard of O’Hooley & Tidow - is this a new pairing? Must have had Scots on my brain (too many bagpipes). Yes, O'Hooley and Tidow. Perhaps Scott and Tidow would have been better though ...
