I'm not normally one for songs, I prefer to hear the instrument sing but this is a good un. I've not heard of it before but I recognised the tune from a current TV ad...
The Martin Dread in this sounds delicious, Im taking its in dropped D...

It's a great song - the folk club I attended and sang at in the mid 1960s -early 1970s always ended every session with the singing of this song. Happy memories.

The guitar does sound nice but I'd guess at it being an OO 15M. It looks a bit small for a dread.
I like this version too. Obviously it's very polished but the chord progression gives it something extra. Makes it poignant somehow.

I've not heard of it before but I recognised the tune from a current TV ad... Quite possibly the most well-known Scottish (Celtic?) folk song of all time. Interesting to see the Wikipedia entry for the list of recordings. How many YouTube videos of recordings from that list can we get on here? I agree with Keith, every wannabe folkie has sung it... even me. Peter

Of course we all know that the Sandy Denny version on her 'I Always Kept a Unicorn' album is the best version. Well maybe my rendition was more 'memorable'. I think the first version I had was by the Clancy Brothers (with Tommy Makem) back in the early sixties, it is called 'Will Ye Go Lassie Go' on the album. I have 8 different versions on my player and probably more still on vinyl. ocarolan , we always ended with Whip Jamboree, probably more suited to our inebriated state. Though Wild Mountain Thyme was always in the mix. Colin

Sandy Denny? Is that the singer in Steeleye Span? I love their version of Gaudete.

NO,that was/is Maddy Prior!
Sandy Denny is the greatest performer to ever come out of these islands, she was part of the greatest 'group' ever to cut a disc, the original Fairport Convention with Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick etc. They made probably the finest album of all time 'Liege and Lief'. She the went on to have a stellar solo career, sadly dying too young.
This song of hers was voted the best Folk Song of all time.
