Been doing some research. It occurs to me that not many people ever talk about Lakewood guitars on here. Does anyone own one? Are they any good? At the time I bought the Huss & Dalton I did play a Lakewood but must say it didn't do anything for me, but wondered if the higher spec models were worth a look?

I bought mine 20 years ago from upstairs in the old Manson's in Exeter. It was the first time I had heard sustain go on and on. During the first week I remember that I often used to strike a string and just listen to it resonate. It's an M-18. I might have been lucky, I don't know. I tried someone's Mahogany Dreadnought Lakewood once and it didn't do anything for me, but I think they're great.

Just listen to that bass (I'm wearing headphones)- amazing. When he starts playing again towards 13 mins and he hits that low 6th again gave me goosebumps. That guitar totally suits his style. Its the A that I'm quite interested in. They do some 13 fret join models with 650mm scale length, thus pushing the bridge back. Its occured to me the best guitars I've ever owned have been 12 fret guitars with long scales that push the bridge back down the body. I always find Lakewoods to be really aesthetically pleasing, with lots of wood trim (I don't think plastic should go anywhere near a guitar, such as for binding). A 12 week turnaround if you custom order one too Lovely video that and daddy seams to like his knew Lakewood very much. The guitar that has got me interested is this one: www.lakewood-guitars.co.uk/guitar_details.php?series=edition&model_id=a-15_ed24The only trouble is I don't care too much for the orange hue of it all, so might have a play around with the custom designer. What a delightful Saturday morning treat! A lovely guitar, beautifully played and described by such an interesting man. 46mm nut and 13 frets as well, I want one!

What an interesting dude Carl Bludts is; I have subscribed to his YouTube and he is someone I will return to. That Lakewood looks like some guitar for about £2.5k. I wonder if they would charge extra for making me one without that dreadful logo... Peter

I’ve been following him for many years. He’s a nice guy too 🙂

Malcom it would be great if you could specify which one's you have found wonderful and which have been fairly dull. Any particular sizes (C, M, A, J) that have spoke to you? Robbie

It has occurred to me in my research that Lakewood probably make one of the finest Baritones out there. Listen to this:
I know this is flatpicked and not fingerstyle, but I can hear a richness and clarity in the voice that you don't get with bari's from say Furch or Lowden.
Also they are fairly short scale bari's- 680, as apposed to the 710 of most other makers.
Now this has planted another idea in my head!

Here is another great sounding video:
And this one dam near brought a tear to my eye- those thick trebles are exactly the holy grail for me:

You've gone and done it now forestdweller - do you realise what you've done. I think you may have been living up country for too long. You've only gone and let people into one of the best kept secrets out there. it's bit like telling every Tom, Dick, or Harry about Plym Bridge or Whitsands That baritone sounds nice. I went through a stage of almost getting one once. I think it was after listening to Martin Simpson's Just a Closer Walk with Thee. Question: Can you tell from those videos how much the sound is down to the guitar and how much is down to the recording process. I don't really get much into the GAS discussions on here. I sometimes wonder if it's because I've got a guitar I am happy with.

Robbie Sorry Robbie, but I can't remember the specific models. Lakewood guitars never really took off in Ireland, a shop in Dublin had the dealership many years ago but he had to stop stocking them because they really weren't popular, I've no idea why. Occasionally one pops up for sale second hand and they are usually keenly priced, so if it's anywhere near me I try to play them. I have had very mixed results when ordering a custom instrument but if I was ordering in this way, the A series is the most appealing. Bear in mind that YouTube videos can be very misleading, no one is going to post a video of a guitar that they don't like or doesn't sound good.
