So last night I made a pilgrimage to the Glasgow suburb of Busby into rarely played mix of classical/jazz/flatpicking & resonator blues & billed as a "Night of Guitars" (at least here in Scotland)....
(new for me) Solea Duo who were certainly embracing their Rodrigo Y Gabriela vibe with a mixture of some self-penned short classical pieces/flamenco & jazz...
First on stage & opening the evening was a duo led by Alan Train alternating between playing a Gretsch resonator & a Gibson J 185 accompanied by an excellent bass player (fretless Fender Precision). Alan is entirely self-deprecating initially wanting to frighten the audience with his "shiny guitar".... a selection of self-penned songs & standards followed & played to an exceptional & well-rehearsed level.
I enjoyed the stripped back sound without the aid of any form of percussion & the audience were most appreciative.
However, the highlight for me & as announced by the Solea duo after their initial set, was the virtuoso playing of classical pieces by Stewart Kelly (playing a Ryan Gibson classical guitar). He experimented & played, unusually for classical repertoire, with various open tunings. which unfortunately led to a snapped bass E string upon tuning back to standard pitch after the conclusion of one of his self-composed pieces. Fortunately he had another back up guitar on stage with him.
The evening ended with all 4 guitarists playing as an ensemble each in turn taking improvised leads on the song melodies. This was fascinating to watch & as an aural experience it actually worked as you had one player on a jumbo Gibson & the other 3 on classical guitars!! & who says classically trained guitarists don't know how to jazz it up--Mr Kelly proved that wrong- a really exceptional talent.
The acoustics in the small church were excellent & at the end they announced they will play again as an ensemble towards the end of the year- I can't wait...
