I'm pleased to say Best Beloved and I played a short but pleasing set at EuroBal Wessex on Sunday. We played 5 dances from the Breton Bal Folk Repetoire, two Breton numbers, a Bourree a deux temps, an 11 step waltz and a regular waltz in the musette style to the splendid tune, Mon Amant de St Jean. About 35 minutes worth. Despite best beloved nerves ( there is a bit of story) all went very well dancers danced, applause was given. Despite a couple of minor finger wobbles along the way nothing notable went wrong. Yaay! BB needed 3 melodeons, I took my newly repaired Giustozzi, I left the mandolin at home despite it fitting in well with Mon Amant...it doesn't have the presence to compete with BB's very assertive ( raucous) Hohner Pokerwerk.
The house band had a variety of instruments two 'gurdies, a bazouki, a cello ( good'n'deep) and a piano accordion. It was a very pleasant afternoon indeed. We learnt a new Auvergnate Bourree as well... Bourree de Poile. Always good to pick up something new even after 30 years or so of dancing this stuff.
Numbers of people like this are rare in the UK. Here is my favourite Bal Folk clip of the moment, the band are excellent and the dancers are brilliantly exuberant.

That reminds me of when we went to a ball in Vienna a few years back. Mrs.T had always said she'd love to go, so I booked a couple of tickets, and it was *grand*. Full evening dress and ball gowns, of course (I even learned to tie a proper bow tie specially - no elastic ones allowed!) but the dancing was like that - rather chaotic with a few people who knew what they were doing trying to do it properly, but everyone hugely enjoying themselves. It started at 9pm, we ducked out at about 2:30am and walked back to the hotel through the falling snow. Felt like being in a film ;-)
Funniest bit, though, was that if you wanted to go as a single, they would arrange a dancing partner for the evening. But if you were male, you had to have an interview to make sure you were acceptable. Not sure I'd have passed, but luckily I didn't have to.

What a nice thing to do. Complete with romantic snow. Wow.( We had pain in the butt snow at a New Year bal in Dunkirk on one occaision) Dance should be about fun and enjoyment and not just the "correct" steps.
Music wise my one target is to get me guitar chords slick enough to accompany Best Beloved, I suppose any stumbles won't matter all that much if BB is played the Pokerwerk no one will hear them
