As we all get ready to display our “beach bodies” to the unsuspecting world I thought I’d take the opportunity to show mine off Perhaps foolishly I took the pickguard off my new Furch. As expected a bit of a tanline. I’m sure it will fade in time but I thought it would be interesting to see how it evolves? This was taken today

Well I left it out in the sun for a few hours yesterday, may be wishful thinking on my part but the area where the pick guard was seems a little darker?

I do think they look better sans pick guard. How did you remove it?

I do think they look better sans pick guard. How did you remove it? Chisel and lump hammer Seriously I finally found a use for a plectrum. So using a hairdryer to gently warm it I put the plectrum under the pointed bit of the pickguard and then gently peeled it away. Just needed to work slowly and carefully. But I agree it looks better. And I think the tan line is becoming less distinct. I was going to get a UV lamp but I’m not sure it’s needed.

I really like the clear pick guard on my Lowden, it protects the area but is invisible.

I really like the clear pick guard on my Lowden, it protects the area but is invisible. Don’t mind the clear ones but the tortoiseshell spoilt, I thought, a lovely top. More sunbathing today so hopefully will eventually fade away.

Is your profile pic ^ Joe Cocker? It was based on Tilly the Telecaster toting terror. Here she is in her reading glasses .

Looks better without the pickguard to my eyes. Only 1 of my acoustics has a pickguard and that one very closely matches the colour of the sides wood. But as I don't use a pick I have the luxury of not needing one at all for protection. Mark PS - Great picture of the dawg! She looks very calm and serene - beautiful colour too. If I put reading glasses on our Cocker I'd fear for their safety - I think he has a moose in his ancestry.

I had George Lowden add a pickguard when he built mine, mainly because I was playing quite a lot of strummy stuff with a plectrum at that point and was worried about damaging the top. After a few years I switched to fingerstyle and decided that the guitar would look better without the tortoiseshell pickguard, but George said that there would always be a visible tan line, so I decided to leave it on. I don't think they did clear pickguards then (early 80s) so it had to be tortoiseshell, but if I was getting another guitar made (hah!) I'd leave the whole thing off.

She’s very tolerant, partly because she loves getting attention, but also very easy to put on her harness. The cockapoo on the other hand, despite being 9 years older, wouldn’t have put up with it.

Another day, a little darker: I also rescued some cardboard from the recycling and built a crude mask. Maybe I should change my name to Zorro?
