I went over to Promenade Music, in Morecambe, yesterday. Whilst there, buying another guitar, a few months ago, I'd played the Tom Delonge Stratocaster and really liked it. One of those guitars that stays in the back of your mind, for possible future purchase. Then I saw on the website, that they were doing this very guitar for £250 off, for a mark on the headstock. So I had to go and take a look. I always like to try a few guitars, for comparison, so lined up the Delonge, with 2 Hagstroms, an Ultra Max and a Fantomen, both in black. The Ultra Max is a very smart looking guitar and plays nicely. But it didn't grab me and the pickups, although good enough, didn't really shine. The Fantomen, on the other hand, has great pickups. plays very well and for a large, unusually shaped guitar, balances well too. I've owned this model before, in sunburst and it is a top instrument. It very much gave the Delonge a run for it's money and has far more versatility of tone. But for me, guitars that have their strap button at the heel of the neck, are always a bit of a compromise. So the nicely reduced in price Tom Delonge Strat came home with me. I love it's simplicity and ease of use. The guitar came perfectly set up. The Daphne Blue finish is really sweet and the hardtail, string thru body design seems to add resonance. Probably best of all, is the single, Seymour Duncan Invader pickup. One of the best humbuckers I have heard, particularly pushing overdrive. Tom Delonge is primarily known as an inventive punk rock guitarist, and this guitar/pickup combination does that sound brilliantly, but to my ears it can cover a lot more styles than that. Classic rock and even metal are just 2 that come to mind. This is a well made and designed, single humbucker, hard tail strat, that is a pleasure to play and has a character of it's own.

Wow, what a great reduction for such a minimal "defect" - nice one! Congrats.

Very nice. I like the simplicity of that, although I almost always use the neck pickup on my Strat so I'd like the simplicity but slightly amended :-) Nice colour, too.
Tell me, do you keep all the guitars you buy, or do you trade them in?

Tell me, do you keep all the guitars you buy, or do you trade them in? Derek Gone are the days when I had a room full of guitars. Now I am retired, I have to be a bit more responsible. I do trade in or sell stuff on Gumtree. At the moment I have 4 electrics, 2 acoustics and a bass. The bass earns the money I spend on gear. I am more low and mid range price these days, rather than higher end. I used to own Tom Anderson, Suhr, Duesenberg, Japanese Gretsch etc etc None of my current herd cost more than £1500 Having said that, I spent 2 and a bit hours in Sound Affects, a few days ago, trying out Les Pauls by Gibson and Epiphone and a high end Eastman. None of which matched my under £400 Vintage Les Paul, for finish, playability or tone. Though TBH, I stayed away from the LPs that were well over 2 grand. The Les Paul is my favourite style of electric guitar, just for the way they play and feel. Though I do have a taste for Strats and Teles and single cut semis.

I think I need to get on Gumtree and start selling! I do have a few too many guitars, although to be fair I do play them all. Most of mine are mid-range guitars that I've bought used for well under £500. Never come even close to breaking the £1k barrier, but I must admit have been tempted recently. When I retired the plan was to buy a really nice guitar for once in my life but it hasn't happened yet. Other priorities -and expenses - have cropped up, and to be honest, what I have is plenty good enough for the gigs I do.
From the sounds of it you play bass in a band?

Derek Yeah, I have been playing in bands on and off for 50+ years. Since retiring I have been doing a lot of gigs, mainly with a 60s (era) rock band, which has been good for my vocal harmonising. I also recently started playing with a 70s to 90s band, as well. Keeps me active and gets the readies in, for guitar purchases.

Totally agree, a single pickup guitar, with a simple bridge, seems to add up to lots of tone and a very vibrant guitar. I think you'll love your LP Junior. I have one: acousticsoundboard.co.uk/thread/14278/ngd-lp-junior-scThat thick, slab body and full, chunky neck, with a great, dog ear P90, is hard to beat.

Unless it has three single coils it ain't really a strat.

I love the simplicity of your new purchase. A single pickup and no tremolo. Brilliant, just use the volume knob to get the tone.

Unless it has three single coils it ain't really a strat. IMO some of the best sounding strats of all time had 2 pickups (Ry Cooder's, Blake Mills too)
Congrats on your ngd grayn. I do like the look of a nice hard tail but they seem to be thin on the ground.

Nice guitar and a good deal. I am very much a traditionalist with guitars, so for me a Strat is 3 single coils with springs in the back. God knows how many Strats I've had over the years, all with trems that I always block off. I am however, a huge fan of single pick up guitars, the Fender Esquire being a great example, but I'd want a tone control, especially on anything Telecaster. You enjoy that Strat budy.
