I just picked up a fairly odd handmade guitar, it seems quite proficiently built, if needing some repairs and tweaks, but I’m not entirely sure what the back and side woods are, the top is euro spruce, but I can’t tell if the rest is Indian, Brazilian, Amazon etc rosewood, has anyone a better eye for timbers?, I don’t work with rosewood too often so I’d just be guessing largely Cheers

It could be BRW, does it smell like chocolate? However, as it comes from a fairly small diameter tree my best guess would be Madagascan, the colour match and grain pattern are typical of small log Madagascan. In the 90s Madagascan was being substituted for BRW and at the time could be obtained for a reasonable price, I bought ten sets from Madinter for £75 a set back in the mid 90s when SM were charging $500. If I had one guess from the pictures, it would be a lower grade Madagascan from a small log. It is of course now CITIES listed.

Colin Thanks Colin, it does actually smell remarkably chocolatey in the soundhole, I believe so anyhow, combined with the smell of someones loft

That's BRW then Alex. They did start using wood from smaller trees and branches when the larger logs became unobtainium. They were even using reclaimed BRW fence posts and barn joists for furniture and instruments. This is old growth BRW, very similar colour to yours, this is a three piece back. Colin

Oh marvellous, I had a hunch, thats a lovely guitar too
I need to do some work to this one, I was quite amazed when I looked in the soundhole and found it was built without a bridge plate and without tone bars, I'm slightly amazed it held up, time to finish it off
