Isn't it funny how you can be bowling along in life, perfectly happy with your guitar(s), no thoughts about adding to the collection, and then a tiny germ of an idea, which sneaks up from you don't where, suddenly and dramatically becomes an insistent longing which is quite overwhelming, all in no time at all. It's like pricking your finger on an innocuous-looking thorn and two days later you're on life support with raging sepsis.
It's only in hindsight that I realise that the notion of acquiring a really nice dreadnought had been lurking away in the further reaches of my brain for some time. I'd watched, idly I'd thought, a couple of videos on YouTube comparing the Furch Vintage 2 DSr with a Martin D28 and concluding that it really was extremely good. That was enough to set the unwitting train of thought in motion, though I still had no intention whatsoever of actually getting one.
I discovered that there are other excellent options to the Furch: the Iris DF, the "Burst" version of which is a real slope-shouldered looker but is unavailable in the UK and apparently unlikely to be so for months, and a selection of tasty looking Atkins, but they're half as much again and all seem to have a nut width of 1 11/16" which rules them straight out for me.
Then more idle googling a couple of days ago and, would you believe it, Jimmy Egypt & Sons in Glasgow has a sale on which includes a number of Furchs (he's a main dealer) including that Vintage 2 DSr (nut width 1 3/4") with a massive £660 discount. So over I popped yesterday (only an hour's drive plus 25 minutes "recalculating route" as I've never updated the SatNav), parked up outside, went in asking if there was any free parking nearby and Jimmy Egypt (whom I'd never met before) dug into his pocket and handed me a few pound coins for the meter - you wouldn't get that at GuitarGuitar!
Jimmy told me about his recent visit to the factory in the Czech Republic - do take a look at the blog, it's an amazing place. He couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. I was hooked (I never stood a chance) settled up (he refused to add the parking charges to the bill), an LR Baggs Anthem SL was fitted, along with a new set of D'addario XS, while I went for a sandwich and I was back home with a brand new guitar by early afternoon. It hasn't quite sunk in yet.
I can thoroughly recommend this great little independent, family-run, business. Check them out!
With grateful thanks to my incredibly understanding wife!
