When I am out clearing my mind on my motorbike I often have music playing through my helmet intercom. It is the only time I use “shuffle” and this has brought to light tracks from my past that I had all but forgotten. This one such. I was instantly transported back nearly 50 years when I bought the LP. Such is the power of music.
I have no idea, sadly, what the lyrics mean but there is something about the singing and the relatively straightforward accompaniment that brings a lump to my throat.

Thank you so much Keith. I had long wondered what the song was about. I certainly had not guessed its antiquity. The sadness of its story shines through in any language. Brian

Really lovely. Somehow the whole thing - but especially the double bass and the voice - reminds me a bit of Pentangle.

I had a Clannad album but it got left behind in the move sadly. Enya was once a member.

I had a Clannad album but it got left behind in the move sadly. Enya was once a member. It's a family band! The Brennans (two brothers and a sister) and their twin uncles. Enya is another sister. They were originally called the Clann as Dobhar ('Family from Dore') in Donegal, shortened to Clannad. I have a sweet spot for them. Peter

I first came across Clannad as singing the theme to The Hooded Man (with Sean Connery's kid as Robin Hood)
I last came across Clannad as singing the theme to The Hooded Man (with Sean Connery's kid as Robin Hood)
I'm sure they've done other good stuff, I've just not come across it - or sought it out.

They are to my mind much better than their “hits”. Some examples:

brianr2 , you might want to listen to their album Crann Ull which marks the band's shift from folk to something more modern, however you may call it. Crann Ull is one of my all time favourite albums.

They are to my mind much better than their “hits”. Some examples: I've always loved the Eleanor Plunkett tune since I first heard ocarolan's version (played on his Tacoma Papoose)
