Try and get your thumb over onto the bass string on this one:

I just think its bad finger placement on my part. Its like my fingers can't reach properly. Especially the ring finger and pinky.(Not such a problem with ukulele) I suggest you play with a capo at the 5th fret, the arm is more comfortable next to the body and stretches are reduced... then over time place the capo in lower positions. That thumb position is very awkward and will severely limit what you will be able to achieve with the guitar...instead of one approach I suggest you try to get comfortable with thumb over the neck and perhaps a more classical thumb in back of the neck position...it will help. Also experiment with how you're sitting..your posture etc..and perhaps think of getting a guitar that may be smaller bodied or shorter scale.Lot of good advice given in this thread..don't disregard it.
