The way you play Keith I find it hard to believe you'd struggle with tab or notation!

The way you play Keith I find it hard to believe you'd struggle with tab or notation! He just makes things up as he goes along. It’s all just luck, very little skill or thought involved.

Hmm there's no app called TablEdit on android. There are others but they're just TAB editors. I just want to stick to standard notation now that I've learned how to read it.

The way you play Keith I find it hard to believe you'd struggle with tab or notation! Music isn't bound by, or found in either tab or notation. Both these merely represent a sketch onto which the player must add colour and texture. My ears have been my teachers for 60+ years. I can use both written forms very slowly, I understand how they work and what they mean - I just struggle to play meaningfully from them, particularly with regard to timing. Single melody lines are no problem, but once more than the occasional bass note gets in there I'm stuffed! It can be a blessing and a curse at the same time. Keith

That’s the viewer. The editor for a tablet (or iPad at least) is called TefPad, TablEdit is the desktop version. Pretty sure there’s an Android version.

After decades of believing making music was was dependent on knowledge and skill, I stopped thinking about it, and just make stuff up as I go along, and now I'm starting to make music that pleases me immensely and expresses something I can't put into words. I feel very lucky!

Yea most of my music is made up on the fly, improvised. I just like to be able to read sheet music too. And for me guitar requires me to know what I'm doing.

Technical knowledge is important. It reminds me of the long running debate about whether jazz musicians understand what they're doing when they improvise. Charlie Parker said "I learned to read music and all the theory, I practised, practised, practised, then I get on stage, forget all that and just wail!"

Ben Walker has some lovely arrangements free of charge to download on his website. www.benwalkermusic.com/tabsKeith Hinchcliffe's Carolan's Dream album has some great arrangements of Carolan tunes in a variety of fun tunings. There's a tab book too available here: pjmusic.co.uk/carolans-dream/I'd,also recommended Tristan Seume's Patreon - loads of great arrangements and quite straightforward. Mostly in CGDGCD. www.patreon.com/tristanseumeTabs are often "dual score", including the notation too, but when the arrangement is in open tunings having the notes is often not so helpful.
