Not meant in any way as a morbid subject at all but one which I'm having a wee think about, (hoping I'm not tempting fortune!!)
When your 'final time' comes, your inheitance and wills will no doubt identify your main assets and where they go (if you haven't spent them all!). But, specifically, what about your guitars?? They are probably very personal to you and no doubt some quite valuable. But it may also be the case that your next of kin would have no idea what to do with them and, personally, I'd hate for them just to be sold to some dealer and go wherever they then go. So, do you make a separate list of who should get what so that you know they will be loved and cherished in the way you have? Or to raise money to go to charity in some way?
As above, I'm not meaning it to be morbid or to signal that think I'm about to croak!!! 😧. But I would be interested in your views. (And of course if you have a particularly superb item which you don't know where it should go, then I can give you my address for donations. 😂🤣

It would be great if I had sons , daughters , nephews ,nieces , grandchildren etc who played and might enjoy one of my instruments ...sadly not the case for me currently although hopefully there is still some time left for one or more of them to develop an interest!

I've been thinking about this a lot recently. I'm in two minds to sell near enough everything I own or commission a new guitar.

I trust my wife to know what to do with them in much the same way she trusts me to know what to do with her handbags (I have the bigger job there).
I suspect my sons will have some input but my wife has knowledge enough of guitars and who would deserve them.

I’m struggling with this at the moment. I’ve recently inherited some guitars and gear from my late father in law, who I loved dearly. We were the only musicians in the family, although my husband has expressed an interest in becoming more involved. I am desperately hoping that my 2 month old grandson will have the passion, barring that I’m not sure what to do. Neither of my children care about guitars and would probably hang on to them out of guilt. I don’t want to leave them with that burden.

I’ve made a list of all my instruments and my (3) kids get to pick in turn. There’s an envelope for each instrument which (after they’ve picked) will tell them who made it, when, woods, and what I paid for it.
Each envelope also has my login details for this ‘ere forum so that anything unwanted can be offered for sale here in the first instance with any proceeds split 3 ways.
After that, it’s ’give to friends, donate to schools, save for bonfire night’ not necessarily in that order because, as the Eric Bogle song goes, I won’t care cos I’ll be f**king dead. 😀

This has been on my mind, too. Again, not really for morbid reasons, but more so as a general downsizing plan. There's actual downsizing to consider sometime in the future, and also I really don't want to leave a great deal of stuff to be sorted out, so I'd rather work through it all myself whilst I still can. I also have, like earwighoney a vague idea of selling a lot of stuff and then one day buying a really nice guitar. I suspect that'll never happen, though (the second half of the vague idea). Anyway, my collection is more sentimental than valuable. I have promised my stepson my old Strat and my Martin. The rest isn't worth much so it will slowly be divested. Now I'm not really gigging I don't need so much kit, anyway. Derek

Hmm, tricky one that. But a very relevant point for many/all of us.
I have put nothing in writing as yet, (though Mrs O'C is aware) but if my two grandsons turn out anything like their parents they will likely have more than a passing interest in playing music. So at the moment I'd be thinking of leaving my two oldest guitars to them, thereby giving the guitars a new lease of life in young hands.
As to the rest, I'd obviously like them to go to appreciative homes too, but nothing is as yet decided. perhaps my brother might get lucky!
I'm probably going to leave a request to anyone receiving a free instrument directly as a result of my death that if they choose to sell it they might donate 50% of the proceeds to their favourite charity.
And this Forum and HB? will undoubtedly be good places to move things on...

I’ve said this before, but my daughter dabbles with the guitar, so I asked her genuinely, if she had her pick of my guitars when I’m gone, which would she choose?
After a moment’s thought, she asked ‘what one’s the most expensive?’.
So there we have it. While they might be precious, sentimental pieces of art to us, they’re likely just fodder for Cash Converters to others.
Maybe I’ll just bury them all with me…

Mine will be arranged on stands around my embalmed body inside my mausoleum*
*nothing ostentatious, just a simple 90’ inverted pyramid in black marble, I don’t want to be a burden to my ancestors.

I have children, step children, grandchildren and step grandchildren all and I do mean ALL I have tried to interest in playing guitar. Finally the last one to be born, my granddaughter, started with the ukulele and has moved onto guitar and so she is the front runner in inheriting my stringed instrument estate. (My, now middle aged , son sang in a heavy metal band so he gets nowt!) I am also blessed with a godson who is a professional musician. However his instruments are double bass, bass and piano. He also has nothing to do with a heavy metal band so he is the likely recipient of something(s).

The burial thought is quite nice. Having said that, if you're looking not to be too ostentatious with costs that would entail a dreadnought size box as compared with a parlour size Even that though is better than if you opt for cremation John

Easy one for me, I only have one daughter so she gets the lot. She's taking an interest in playing so hopefully by then she'll keep em all!
