Interesting variety of thoughts and of course everyone's situation is different. Leo is clearly the most organised. Hate the thought of a cremation which would burn my guitars at the same time. I suppose the Egyptians may have had it right when they buried you with your favorite posessions. So if anyone in my village hears weird sounds coming from down below when I've gone then you'll know what they are.
Whatever, I'll give it some thought and come up with a solution that suits my circumstances. Would be nice to think that forumites could band together to raise miney for a music related charity but impossible to organise.
Thanks for the responses.

My instruments, I am sure, will come to good use and make someone happy wherever they land. One thing, however, makes an exception, and that's the Tube Screamer that I bought out of my 13 year-old hard earned money when it first came out in Denmark around 1980 or so. It followed me ever since and looks like a WWII relic, but works like a charm. Our grand daughter knows it for what it is, so her name is one it. Anybody else would probably throw it away - or if they recognise it, sell it on Reverb and no one would be happy.

Old battered TS's look cool as anything!

Like many here I am downsizing on guitars...okay never say never etc but I really dont want my daughters to have to deal with my absence and then a load of idiots on reverb. My grandchildren may want one each but at the end of the day they are simply possessions to be enjoyed whilst we inhabit this planet

Nobody sadly. It’s something that bothers me. Same. I have been thinking about this recently as well. Still, I hope to have time to come up with a satisfactory solution. Perhaps I will just refuse to die like Hob Gadling in "The Sandman".

Shouldn't we be worried about the fate of our poor beloved guitars after we've gone? Who will know which ones are "Special" (Yes, all of them, I know). Just think that some House Clearance bloke might come along and take them to a junk shop. For instance, one of my favourites is a 1970's Vega "D18" a big powerful Bassy boomer that handles the whole spectrum of styles beautifully who will know what that is? It's probably worth very little, but it's a wonderful thing, probably as good as the stuff the Parent Company were producing at that time; be awful for it not to go to someone proper.---------------and so on!
Perhaps we should try setting up some Niche within the Forum?
Sorry to ramble, Robin.

I’ll rock up to a few open mic nights when I’m on my last legs and find someone with a bit of passion about them and say have a guitar.

Just think that some House Clearance bloke might come along and take them to a junk shop. On the other hand, think of all the great future "find" stories that are just waiting to be told! The young players who don't have much money and who just happen to visit a junk shop and find that magical guitar. The songs they write, the gigs they play, the moment they dig a little deeper and (with future AI technology) discover videos of you with that guitar and start to learn its history. So long as the guitars aren't smashed up for kindling(*), then they will live on. (*) And even there are stories to be told:"I know it's an old Martin, but it's twelve below outside, and the winter is but a month old...We either freeze, darling, or I burn this guitar." "But Delboy once played this guitar..." "Yes, I know... which is why I say..." "Burn it!"

I honestly don't know. I was drunk. I wandered down this alley just off the high street and there was this shop with a bunch of really nice guitars and these old geezers sitting in a circle playing folk music and drinking whiskey.
Well that shouldn't be hard to find.
I know right. But when I went back.... The shop wasn't there.

I don't think I've ever seen John Denver mentioned on AS ....this may be the moment! He would be a strong contender for the "unusual shirt " competition at HB XX too ..

Yes, exactly my sentiment and precisely why our granddaughter is getting the Tube Screamer (so it doesn't end up on Reverb with all the other outrageously priced green companions). By the way earwighoney, the picture is here...

Love an old battered TS. With a JCM800, it's the sound of a lot of great music (eg 80's thrash, which I love dearly).

I had to confront this question back in January 2017 when yjre told me I had throat and tongue cancer. There is no-one in my family in the least interested in my rather large collection.
My delightful but severely disabled daughter-in-law has made her living with her online business for some time, and back then I asked her if she would handle the disposal for me.
I set to, preparing full descriptions suggested buy it now or make offer prices and images on an SD card. Apparently, I survived the ghastly treatment, but at 76 and with other health concerns, I'm thinking of updating that file, and asking her if she's still prepared to do the business for me.
Since Brexit took effect, the options for selling into the EU have vastly decreased as they will now have to pay their local excise duties and VAT, effectively reducing selling prices into the EU and to the USA by about 20-25%.
