From this month's magazine (October 2014), page 86 on adjusting the truss rod: "you'll want to either tighten the truss rod (clockwise turns) to create more of a bow, or loosen it to straighten the neck (anti-clockwise)". Furthermore: "we would normally advise loosening the neck first as a precaution." Surely this is yet another example of the magazine's incompetence? Or have I got it wrong? Robbie

Yes - you tighten the truss rod to reduce relief, ie make the neck straighter (although you'll eventually get 'back bow') and you loosen the rod to increase relief.
And there's no need to 'loosen the neck' first as far as I know, would seem to be counterintuitive if you need to tighten it a little to slack it off first!

Yes, you very definitely tighten the truss rod to straighten the neck and reduce relief. I assume the advice was meant to read "we would normally advise loosening the strings first as a precaution."

Robbie. You are right - that statement is wrong. Tightening the truss rod takes out neck bow and straightens the neck, loosening the truss rod creates more bow in the neck and gives more "relief". With a two way truss rod you can turn it anti-clockwise to correct back bow and introduce neck relief. Did they recommend using a hammer to loosen the neck first ?

That will be exactly what they've meant but still gave the Wrong advice . I've only ever done it once and as everyone else and common sense dictates you tighten to straighten . The mag was always full of mistakes like that ,that's why I've not bought it for months .

I've posted on the magazine's Facebook page as there may well be people who would follow the advice as given.. The mag, of course, has no other way to communicate en masse with its readership. It would be awful if someone ruined their instrument because they followed incorrect advice...
I wonder how long the post will stay up there, though?

You're not suggesting the magazine censors its FB fans are you? It would actually be a good thing if Guy registered on here sometime, just to address things like this...

Same publisher, so same team Derek - that explains the similarities you are talking about. Dunno if Guy editied the Bass mag, as he's quite a young chap. As far as I know, Ben (the previous Acoustic editor) went to the Bass mag, but has since gone elsewhere.

Well-spotted Robbie! A pretty fundamental (and potentially damaging) error there... I know between us we occasionally bang on about B**** guitars here from time to time (!), but on page 20 of the last/current edition of 'Babbling Brook' is an article on adjusting guitars which might help to set fellow forum members - and maybe a few of their guitar necks - straight. www.brookguitars.com/Babbling%20Brook%20Issue%202.pdf?v=8N9QZjpb8UA
