Hello everybody! Happy new year!! As some of you are aware, I am the proud owner of a 5 string banjo. I've taken the resonator part of it off (thanks Martin) but still find it uncomfortable to play. For this reason I want to buy a strap for it. I've got one already, but it's very basic and I can't get it quite right. Does anybody have any recommendations? On the Eagle website there are some cradle straps. Has anyone used one of those?

Aloha, Rodders! A happy new year to thee as well Straps for banjos are a bit different to those for guitar. It's all in how they attach to the banjo and how it affects the balance. The cradle strap you mention is good for stability as it tucks in under the brackets and supports the banjo from below the body, balancing the weight nicely, but I found that it depends on the space you have between your banjo hook shoe and the rim that defines whether you can use this or not. Too narrow a gap and the cradling part of the strap won't go between the brackets comfortably. Still, the majority of banjos should be alright. You can also just use a standard guitar strap, and unhook a couple of brackets and put them through the end holes of the strap before tightening them back up again, but this isn't great for stability - I found the banjo wanting to lean forward while playing, and a lot of adjustment was needed to ascertain the optimum strap/bracket attachment position. I recently acquired a cheap and cheerful banjo strap which has metal clips on either end which simply clip onto the brackets, meaning no unhooking or other alteration is required, and so quick adjustments can be made to get the position just right.

Thanks Martin and Keith
Martin, where did you acquire said banjo strap? Actually, I got it free when I bought the Deering Parlor banjo a couple of months back. The guy just handed it to me saying he had a load of them. If you like I can send it on to you - I don't use banjo straps at all just now anyway.

That's very kind of you Martin, but I wouldn't want to leave you strapless! Are the ends like on this one?

It's more like the one below, but with metal clips instead of plastic:

That's a beauty! If you really don't want it, I would try and give it a good home

I'll see if I can dig it out tonight and let you know, but as long as I find it okay, you're welcome to try it out (and keep it, obviously!).
