I tend to use any strings that are made by 'Sale' or 'Special Offer' or BOGOF the Russian string maker.

I've been using Newtone Strings for some time now and I really like them. Strings however are a very personal thing. If you ring Malcolm Newton and tell him what you need, he will make up a custom set of whatever gauge you want. He's a really nice guy, very helpful. Ade www.newtonestrings.com/

Haha! Good to have another user of N-word strings around! andrewjw will be thinking it's a conspriracy, though I did notice even he recently confessed to having some on his resonator.... Keith

Whatever you do don't feel tempted by the Ziko strings on eBay, even though there is even a convincing external website that makes them look like the product of a knowledgeable business and even the packaging suggests some nous. Four sets for a tenner is great if you're selling four guitars to beginners, or want to kill 24 cyclists on a narrow tree-lined pavement, but they're very poor. I fitted and removed two sets today, the other two packs will go in the drawer till I sell something.
I wouldn't have any grasp of the science or the engineering and I don't really get how string-making can be so botched but it seems wasteful to use resources on rubbish and a good thing to refuse to enable this.
Tedious job though it is even done just once in a day, I put a set of Martin SP Bronze 12-54 on next, and by contrast was almost blinded by the sparkly things as I took them out the pack. I was relieved once tuned up that a guitar I'd feared I'd left out for a bit too much of the Winter was sounding lively again.
Just before 9pm Parcelforce, courtesy of a poor self-employed sod working beyond their normal hours, returned a guitar that has apparently had a new neck fitted, though still under four months old. It's to be used in Open B tuning and I'm finding some rebranded Rotosound 12-54 suit it well with a tweaked Tusq saddle slightly more raised on the bass side than usual. I can't say more about the rebranded Rotosounds for fear they'll be discontinued at Rotosounds behest - you'll find them if you want them - but for £2.99 a set they even make the Zikos seem uncompetitive.
I do like the Newtones but with no guitar in E to E standard tuning I'm not expecting to buy them again as the lower tension isn't in my favour I think, and for me at least it's been too easy to cock up the trimming, judging by one too many dead E strings.
