What string gauges do you tuning messers use? I've found the standard gauges don't suit for some low tunings so use two sets to get the right mix. However, it costs more.

That's going to depend a bit on the guitar scale length and the tunings you want to use. A general set that I use and works well for DADGAD and C and G tunings (CGCGCD, DGDGCD etc) are the D'Addario DADGAD strings, EJ24 : 13,17,24,32,42,56.

Coincidentally I was thinking about this earlier and found this 70.61.82.118/StringApp/Specifically in regards to C and C variant tunings, looks like a medium set with replacement low E and possibly lighter B would work.

Strangely relevant this thread I have just invested in a set of 9-46s to put on my 12 string so. I am hoping they won't sound to bad its a two hour job to get them on and tuned up for me anyway.

I'd like to find a ready-made set of 11/14/20/33/42/54- but I've had no luck to date. I'm making them up from single strings. I can make them up from singles from Thomann- but there's always the ten Euro delivery cost. Man would be a mug. www.thomann.de/gb/search_dir.html?sw=single+strings&x=0&y=0

I bet newtone would sell you a custom set direct, or one of shops do custom sets to your specified guages - eagle perhaps.

Thanks, paganskins. I just emailed Newtone with a request. Do you have a link for ' Eagle ' ?

Thanks , Keith. No word from Newtone but I've bought a custom set from Eagles to see how they go. I'll look into your other links, thanks.

I use D'addario EXP 80/20 and have always gone back to them when I've tried others. A matter of personal choice.
Only problem I find, and don't know if its strings or setup, but when I go to drop D I get a bit of twang on the 6th string if I hit it hard (same if I go to full open D tuning). I don't want to compromise the standard tuning by putting an alternative brand on the 6th (even if it worked). Any solutions please?

FFJ Hi You can get a .059 D'addario EXP in a single string at strings direct www.stringsdirect.co.uk/p/919632/daddario-expbw059-8020-bronze-exp-coated-acoustic-guitar-single-string-059/ Not sure if there is anything heavier in that set.
If there is twang or buzz it could be a set up issue. Dave White would probably be better to comment on this.

OK, Newtone sell six custom sets as a minimum order so they'll have to wait until I'm settled on my gauges. I fitted my ' Eagles ' set last night , 11/14/20/32/42/54 and immediately replaced the A and D with a 35 and 44 respectively. Even then I'm finding the 35 too light for heavy sycopated bass picking so I'm going to try a bass end of 36/46/56 . I'll use a 37 if I can find one but there seems to be an ' even numbers ' culture amongst suppliers. It's important that I get this right as I'll be asking Avalon to set up my new guitar to that spec. Of course, once I've determined the correct gauges for my style I'll need to start shopping around for coatings. I'm no fan of string rasp.
