Have a look at thisNow, be honest, which one are you? I reckon I'm a cross between the middle man and the folkie, probably more like the latter. Kingston Trio, anyone?

I reckon from the drawings of guitar heights that I'm an Obeyer. I don't fit the Obeyer profile they suggest though - i) I've never had a teacher ii) I've no idea what Dorian-based sweep-picking is, and so presumably don't do it. iii) I do know what two handed tapping is but I certainly don't do that. iv) I never tuck my shirts in. V) I can't play jazz TAB and sheet music with even well below-average proficiency. The Middle Man description is probably nearest to me. Well, except for the smile that is!! Keith

Purely in terms of height I'm an Obeyer.
The other guys in the band are a good bit taller than me, so when they give me the bass to play I look like I'm trying to be Peter Hook!

Every guitarist I really, really admire plays sitting down. I admire some who play standing up- but they're definitely in a small minority. When I DO play standing up it's generally the ' folkie ' position.

"The Low Rider" probably has the motto " Arse longa, Penis brevis" A prime example of nut compensation

Middle man on guitar, but always preferred to play sitting down and without a strap if possible. There should be a further category to include that. The Lazy Sod?

I also don't use a strap on.......my guitar In fact, I didn't even get an end pin, never mind strap button fitted to my guitar, so even if I wanted to... I do use one with mandolin sometimes to get the playing angle right, even sitting down. Higher the better (low slung is for cool kids and people with confidence & talent).

Me too, Martin. I find a strap to be an absolute necessity on mandolin. Because it's so light there's a temptation to support it with the fretting hand and right forearm, but that's restrictive, especially as subtle shifts of attack are required for techniques like double stopping and tremolo.

I have always thought that the really low guitar guys are complete berks. I guess if you have no skill at all, like Mr Hook, then it doesn't really matter.

I would actually argue that Peter Hook is quite a unique, interesting bassist, regardless of how low he wears his bass. Not a "proper musician" maybe, and he certainly doesn't play bass like a bass but sometimes interesting music comes from people who aren't musos. Just my opinion of course.
