Hi Guys, I’ve just started building a guitar based on my model 2 shape. This will be a marmite moment for forum members; you’ll either love it or hate it! As it’s a bit different, I’ll post a few photos now and then. If you haven't seen one of model 2s, you find them here. I’ve just glued the back together an inlaid a very fine decorative stripe made up from ultra-thin black/red/black lines and abalone; the whole stripe (6 lines and the abalone) is just over 2.5mm wide. When you are doing fancy stuff, it really is a case of less is more! Cheers Gary

I like the stripe and the shape, Gary. Not something I'd usually go for, but I love what you did with Andrew's mandocello in this style, so I think it will be very striking

Plus one on the stripe...beautifully executed and very classy. Naturally I'll be in the love it camp given the mandocello....sounding lovely acoustically and stunning amplified via the Headway UST through a Headway preamp...

What is the wood? It looks nice, is it East Indian Rosewood?
How wide is it at the lower bout?
Would be interested to hear a soundclip when it's finished.
Good to see a unconventional design, a break from the norm is a well appreciated distraction.

Looking forward to hearing this one Gary. Andrew's mandocello is a lovely thing - it'll really interesting to hear how the shape works out as a guitar.

The lower bout is 370 mm; overall body size is very similar to a Martin OO. Thanks for your interest Cheers Gary

I’ve just been working on an abalone N logo inlay for the model 2 guitar. The shape is drawn freehand on the abalone; although each logo looks similar I like the idea that each one is subtly different adding to the uniqueness of the instrument and maybe reflecting the time when the instrument was made. After some careful marking out with a scalpel, I use my dremel to remove most of waste; you can only go so far before reverting to hand tools for the final shaping. If you use a black/ebony head overlay you can be less accurate as any large gaps can be filled with black epoxy; so more care is need on this rosewood head. The inlay is glued in with epoxy and once hard, any tiny gaps can filled with rosewood dust a CA glue. Hey presto! Cheers Gary

I thought you were being super strong there, garynava, until I looked more closely and spotted the hot pipe

Hi Guys, I've completed the abalone rosette for this guitar. The oval sound hole presents its own challenges as each piece of abalone has different curve to it. There are quite a few more photos on my blog of the various stages in making it. Cheers Gary

That looks lovely Gary... The oval sound hole and abalone rosette on my/your MandoC has been much admired.. It also has the practical advantage of being easier to get your hand in to change the battery used by the Headway UST...
