The model 2 guitar is now coming together. As with all my guitars, the neck is joined to the body with a tapered dovetail joint; the female section in the body is routed whilst the male section is cut and fitted entirely by hand. The alignment of the neck is, of course, critical and on a cutaway even more so, as one edge of the fingerboard has to line-up perfectly with the edge of the cutaway. Once the neck has been glued in place (no clamps, just a good joint and gravity!), I continue the slot for the carbon-fibre rods into the body to make the joint even more rigid. And after some more careful alignment, the fingerboard goes on. Inlays tomorrow! Cheers Gary

Looking good, Gary ... I love this shape - it's just so curvaceous! Looking forward to seeing what you do with the inlays, like

Great stuff, Gary. I love guitar-build threads.
I'd really, really love to watch a build in person.
All the best,
Alasdair.

Well, if you've got a spare 100 or so hours.......you'll have to bring your own sandwiches! In between the photos there are hours of work, which many might find a little tedious; fortunately I don't! Cheers Gary

Well Guys, we're into French polishing now, so nothing too spectacular will be happening for awhile! Plenty of other things happening,if you're interested. Cheers Gary

Well, if you're as rubbish at crafty stuff as I am, French Polishing counts as 'something spectacular'! The blog's looking goo, too, Gary

Hi Guys, We're back! With the French polish now fully dry, the bridge can be glued on. In my opinion, this is one of the most fraught times in the construction of a guitar. Firstly, you’re working on a freshly finished instrument and secondly the placement of bridge has to be spot on. Here’s a brief description of the process. The underside of the bridge blank (lump of ebony) has to be shaped to match the curve of the soundboard. Then I make the bridge itself, here it is ready to be positioned. Some very careful marking out is done. Tip of the day- fold back one corner of the masking tape, makes it much easier to remove. The bridge position is marked out with scalpel- just enough pressure to cut through the tape and score the finish. Then the finish (whatever is used) has to be scraped off so that there is bare wood for the glue to adhere to. Then we have a dry run………… And then with glue. 24 hours later we’re ready for the setting-up process. Cheers Gary
