We went to see KP at the Phoenix in Exeter last night...
She was ably assisted by her brother Steven on guitars [classical , steel strung and Telecaster] and Inge Thomson on percussion , accordion , and a variety of other not always readily identifiable instruments which added interest and variety to the overall sound. Both sang marvellous harmonies which complimented K's distinctive vocals perfectly.
Karine played an old ? Martin Tenor guitar and a beautiful brand new Taran Mhor... ....it sounded marvellous... www.taranguitars.co.uk/news.html ... great separation and warm, clear tones. K plays capo'd high up much of the time and the guitar worked really well for this. I managed to have a quick word with her at the interval....she only picked up the guitar 6 weeks ago and is delighted with it....both this guitar and the tenor are equipped with K and K's...her live sound was a great advert for these.
The material for the concert was largely from her newish "Traces" album with a few old favourites like "Follow the Heron" and "Waterlily' thrown into the mix plus a couple of songs by Scottish singer songwriter Michael Marra...a new name to me...well worth investigating his work if the two examples K sang are representative.
Inge sang and played a solo piece with clever use of a looping pedal creating layers of vocals rising to a very effective crescendo...atmospheric stuff.
The whole band were completely on top of their game...a faultless performance with a few humorous asides which added to the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The sound was superb...they had their own engineer and sound system.
There are two more nights on this short tour...in Gloucester tonight and Leeds tomorrow night...plus more dates later in November...very well worth a look.
