Hey folks. I have a Martin D1 which has a satin finish. It's got lots of shiny bits on it from contact. I've decided to have a crack at shinying it up myself. 1500 grit wet dry paper and then some silicone free polish. What could go wrong?

I am sure other will chip in here but I would not do what you are suggesting. I one owned a Martin 00016 which was satin and developed shiny bits as you described. Ralph Bown, much valued luthier, advised me to simply use T-Cut which is used for car paintwork and has a slightly abrasive element in the polish. It worked fine for me but you will not get a high gloss finish but it will look like the shiny bits all over. I finished with Gibson Pump polish. Here it is on the right: The OM21 is a gloss finish. Hope this helps. Phil

I've seen other people get fab results. On the internet or have you seen the "polished" guitars in real life? Satin finish materials have built in flattening agents (a bit like fine sand) that give the satin finish and with these in the finish you can never achieve a true polished look. If the guitar has been finished with a non-satin finish and has just been rubbed to a satin look (like Lowden) then you can (assuming the finish is level and deep enough) polish them up but it is not an easy task to do.

Yeah only on internet pics. Might give the back a go and see what results I get.

Done the back and it looks fab. It's not high gloss but it isn't far off.

Just couldn't get the finish flat enough and ended up with that orange peel look. Plus the grease spots didn't disappear. It doesn't look terrible from a distance, just not as good as the back and sides.
