I had a very unexpected but welcome extra Christmas present. Turns out that my wife asked a friend what I'd find most useful, and he suggested a Samson G Track mic. Very nice it is too. www.amazon.co.uk/Samson-GM1U-Condenser-Microphone-Cakewalk/dp/B0015MJE22/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1360055610&sr=8-1 (Apparently my wife got mine for 90 quid from Amazon, but its price seems to fluctuate from day to day.) It has built-in latency free headphone monitoring, a line-in for instrument electronics, and I no longer feel as if I'm losing half of any perfomance, as I did with my old desktop mic. I still have problems with the fan sounds from our PC, but at least I don't feel as technically constrained as before. I haven't had much time to mess with it yet beyond recording a few song prototypes, but here's the very first straight-out-of-the-box fragment I did at Christmas. www.box.com/s/nlt5peamhc1c3gaw4nzqI should say that as a bonus the mic. comes with Cakewalk Sonar LE, which seems to have almost as many interesting options as a nice lady.

Lucky old you! That mic looks the business - I have a Samson dynamic mic which is very good also. The recording you've posted is great - crystal clear sound with a good level of volume without distortion. Hope we get to hear more... It's also interesting that it comes with recording software - I've been looking for something simple yet intuitive to get going on, but can't seem to find that happy medium.

Lucky man! Looks like a great simple to use and clutter reducing solution Pete. The results sound very natural too - looking forward to much more as you explore the nice lady's interesting options! Keith

The Sonar programme is like all DAWs: seems daunting at first, but once you've watched a couple of video tutorials on Youtube all becomes clear. It certainly has a lot more options than Audacity, though it remains to be seen how many I'll use. I like a clean sound.
By the by, my mate suggested the G Track because his own Blue Microphones Yeti died and had to be sent for repair or replacement after a few weeks. Hope this beast proves more reliable than that.

Just listened to the G track sample....apart from giving you a bit of a raunchy Christmas night I thought the new mic gave the recording a real analogue quality ...intimate , crystal clear yet still with loads of warmth. Looks like a real find.
