I was looking at the Fylde website and noticed all the current models have either a cedar or Engelmann spruce top.
Were there every any standard models made with mahogany back and sides and a Sitka top?

Dunno know. Sorry.
Suspect Keith may be best bet...
(Not that he's either 'a' suspect or 'suspect'...)

Lynn, yes, lots!
Sitka used the be norm on standard model spruce topped Fyldes until recently, maybe the past 2 or 3 years, though not absolutely sure about when the change happened.
Also, several of the now sapele b/s standard models used to be Honduras mahogany. Again, not sure when the change happened.
Suspect both changes were gradual rather than overnight things anyway.
Looking at the Fylde website eh? Suspicious activity for Martin gal!

Be careful - the siren-song of a Fylde can be irresistible, not that anyone should want to resist.

To be honest I haven't played Fyldes aside from the 5 mins I spent with Mel's at HB1. I have played a fair few Lowdens which are great for fingerstyle but too responsive/chimey for a flatpick and slightly aggressive strumming. The Avalons I have played have been the same. No doubt there are models that are more suitable, but I haven't found them yet. I was just wondering if Fyldes would be along the same lines.
It's pure curiosity really, I'd like to play a British made guitar that is built more for a flatpick than DADGAD fingerstyle. I'll be bringing home Bernd's SWDGT from HB5 and that will be it for quite some time. Eventually I will get a J45 or a 12-fret dread of some sort, but that is likely to be a ways off.

Hi, I'm hoping to be at Halifax next year and I'll have the Tarans in tow. One of which is being set-up/built for flatpick. You're more than welcome to have a bash (as it were...). Alasdair.

Big show off! Man, her fingers were flying - I can't imagine being able to play like that. I wonder what custom features the guitar has, it sure sounds great.

She's very good - worth checking out the Carrivicks on Youtube actually, Lynn. As far as I can remember from when that guitar was featured in Fylde News, that particular Custom Falstaff has an Adirondack spruce top and has some bracing differences from the usual Falstaff Englemann tops. Can't check to be certain as the Fylde website News Archive now only goes back to 2012 - wot a swizz! Keith
