I've often thought I'd like a second guitar that I could just leave around without worrying about. Tried a Tanglewood TW133 mahogany guitar some time back and loved it, tried another the other day and that was great too. If only the nut was wider...
Went into a shop today and tried a few other guitars, was really impressed by a couple of Tanglewood parlours, again the nuts were a bit narrow. Tried a Sigma TW 15 - loved the sound but again the nut was too narrow and it also felt "too" small.
Tried a Vintage Giltrap model (mahogany)... WOW! What an awesome guitar. Anyone here got one? If so, any links to your recordings? Could be a christmas present from Santa!
Have to say that some of the cheaper guitars these days are really rather good. I've had my Taylor 10 years now, and I had to get to the £1000 price point before finding anything nicer than my old 1980 dreadnought.
I do want to try a Vintage Paul Brett string though (or maybe I'e got a thing about mahogany guitars?). Anyone with PB guitar in Scotland they'd be wiling to let me try?
Oh - and my new purchase was... a second hand mic boom!

I may be wrong but I think Martin has the Paul Brett , not sure if its the 6 or 12 though . You could send Paul a PM as he is a member of the soundboard .

'Fraid I don't have one although I have played it and I'd really like one. I also played the GG model, and probably preferred the PB model.

It's hard to like the Giltrap model due to it's all-round freakish looks. The headstock especially seems to have been hewn from the trunk of the ugly tree. I didn't even want to like it having previously owned a Fylde GG. Strangely, I forgot about the looks when I was playing it!

I've got a PB 12-er and love its playability. I had the chance to have a play on the Vintage GG at the Llyn Guitar Festival and I loved that, too (even its looks - although I accept that beauty is in the eye/ear of the beholder ) It may be that I'm just not terribly discerning; I know that there are some who don't like the look of my DeFaoite Sybil - but I'm bowled over by her

I nearly bought a vintage GG 6 string (not the mahogany one - the original). I tried one at Mansons in Exeter, despite being disturbed by its strange looks and even more disturbed by a neck that initially felt like a baseball bat. But it was the strangest thing. After a minute or two playing it, you forgot all that stuff and it was really comfortable. The one I played was very even toned, and I was most impressed with its plugged in performance. Then I spent the money on something else, and now I have no need of one. I do, however have a PB12. It plays like a 6 string. Just fantastic for a 12 string and is designed to take heavy gauge strings for tuning down (mine is tuned B to B in standard intervals at the moment and growls and roars) or light strings for concert tuning. I don't play in alternate tunings, so I can't tell you how it would perform in those. But I think it's a great guitar with a huge sound for its size. On board electronics are just amazing and it comes with a canvas hard case. For the price - pretty much unbeatable IMHO.

Played a couple of the GG guitars. Man, is the neck on them chunky! I'm not a fan of slim necks, but I found that a bit challenging. I suppose you'd get used to it tho. Nice guitars for the money.

Still stand by my review in Acoustic mag a few years ago - marvellous guitars and great value, too. The fact that mine is on a stand about 5ft away from where I'm typing this kinda emphasises my point!
