Hello, I'm looking to get a soundhole pickup for my acoustic guitar to do some gigs in the future, I use a looper, and I like to use the body of the guitar to create a percussive recorded loop which I then play and sing over. Can anyone recommend a good pick up that would be able to do that?

Mornin' powerjuggler, and to the Forum. Hope someone will have some useful info for you - sorry I can't help as neither soundhole pickups nor percussive stuff are my thing. jwdaubney could well be yer man re percussive stuff, though he uses a K&K dual source system of some sort at present I believe - definitely an internal mic, plus ? mini soundboard transducers? Have fun, and maybe post some of your music sometime - there's a virtual folk club, The Plucky Duck, specially for that! Keith

I don't know a helluva lot about pickups, but I'd imagine that a soundhole pickup might not be the best for picking up percussive effects from the body of the guitar. I know that Fishman (used to ?) do a soundhole pickup with internal mic blend thing, so maybe that kinda thing might be a better option for your requirements. I'm sure there are other similar things on the market. Why do you specifically want a soundhole pickup if you don't mind me asking?
I've used a Fishman Rare Earth Humbucker and a Seymour Duncan "Woody" Humbucker on my guitars before, and although they were both ok pickups I wanted something that sounded more naturally acoustic. The K&K mini works pretty well for me, but I've no idea how good it would be for picking up percussive effects.

I don't do percussive stuff, but I do gig with a guitar that has a bog standard UST piezo pickup, and when you touch the soundboard it picks that up quite well. I realise that's not a soundhole pickup. I do own a Fishman Blend (the type Stringdriventhing was talking about). It's a bitch for feeding back and I'll not use it for gigs again, but in recording environments it's pretty good. I truly don't know what it's like for percussive effects. I have used a little cheapo pickup with a sucker on it (like this) and that makes an enormous booming noise when you hit it (which I have only done accidentally!)

That's really interesting. The Baggs seems rather clearer, but the Fishman picks up the thumps better. That's what I got from it anyway.

Thanks, that video is really helpful, although the fishman is £250, yikes. It does sound best to my ears

Hi Powerjuggler, I was in the same situation earlier this year! But then I started checking out all the gear that my guitar idols used and nearly all of them used K and K products. I currently use the K and K trinity mini system which works brilliantly. It comes with a pick up and a mic (which becomes an internal mic) and also a pre-amp which allows you to have individual control over the two. This is great because you can then blend the pick-up and the mic together creating a really clear tone. This system also works very well for percussive techniques. www.kksound.com/products/trinity.php

Thanks for clarifying that James! Hope you don't mind me posting, for the benefit of powerjuggler, the video I took of you a few months ago to illustrate the effectiveness of your set-up when playing through your AER combo - Keith

I'm a little late to this discussion but here's some advice that you may find useful:
Back when I was exploring this kind of style the pickup of choice was the Fishman Rare-Earth Blend wired in stereo so that you could eq the mic and mag signals separately. Here's an example from back in the day
Now, the fashion has indeed shifted towards the K+K trinity (or whatever they're calling it these days) with mic/USB-T and frankly I'd say a hybrid system is the way to go here as long as you make sure you're carful with body rubs/rivets from your jeans etc etc making their way into your live mix and you have a solid left-hand muting technique for the inevitable wolf-notes caused by hammering on at the 12th fret.
Take responsibility for your sound and ensure that by the time it reaches your audience it is under control, musical and inspiring.
All the best

Powerjuggler, why not try a cheap crappy one? A £20 item might be more microphonic than an £80 one. Got to be worth a go.
