Hi,
Although I have some equipment at home for allowing me to record and create a cd and/or music file which I can then put on my laptop, the next step of making it available on the web is not something I've tackled. I don't really want to set up a website or do something via youtube (unless either of these is the best way).
I noticed that you other guys and gals use a wide variety of platforms for doing this including soundcloud, dropbox etc. Rather than me read up all the options and then guess which one is best (by best for me I think I mean; free; easy to setup and then operate; and doesn't degrade quality; and is easy to put onto things like the Forum).
So I'd appreciate anyone's guidance as to
--which platform to use
--any easy link to a tutorial on how to do it (although I guess this will be easy to find once I have guidance on which one).
Sorry if this has been covered before ......

As far as audio is concerned, I'd recommend you to sign up to Box.com - it's free - you can upload wav files if you wish, though you'll run out of free space sooner. I usually convert my wavs to 320bps mp3 (keeping the wav as well of course) before uploading - can't tell the difference over my computer speakers, though I use wavs for CD burning for hifi system. Box is simple to use, as private as you wish - you need to share the link for someone to find your stuff. You can store individual tracks, or collections in folders. You can also upload docs and pics easily. Listeners can also download. There's facility for sharing folders with persons of your choice for collaborative projects where either party can edit/ad etc. A fair bit of "Help" available on the site, and even (if you wait) by email.
If you want your tracks "out there" and publicly searchable, then Soundclick (which some find confusing but I find easy) or Soundcloud (which I find confusing but most find easy - and we have a widget for it for displaying your track direct in your post) is the way to go. There's a "community" side to these two which you may or may not be interested in. Soundcloud will allow wav uploads, though Soundclick won't (last time I looked - which was some time ago!)
I do use Dropbox for sharing with individuals, esp large video files, but not for Forum posting.
Main rule for me is to keep high quality master files (wav)of everything on my computer. I then usually upload decent bitrate mp3 for internet playing. If I want someone else to have the wav file I'll use Box (space occupying though) and they can download it.
Hope this helps John. Just my personal opinion for my purposes of course.

For some reason I use Soundcloud, Soundclick and Bandcamp (the last of which you forgot to mention, Keith, despite having an account yourself ) Soundclick lets you upload MP3s only, Soundcloud lets WAV files be uploaded (but you quickly run out of free space - but it has got me on a coupe of podcasts..) It used to be that Bandcamp played host to my 'serious' stuff while the other two had the less serious songs but it's all got a bit muddled up... I can't remember why I joined Bandcamp - that's the one that lets you sell music though, as all my music is set to free, there seems little point. I guess if you were doing sensible, commercially-viable stuff, then it would be useful. I never quite worked out Box.com ....

I like all of those mentioned, and am using Soundclick, Box and Soundcloud.
At the moment, Box is easier to navigate and to upload for me, but for posting on the forum, the embed widget we have for Soundcloud makes that option really appealing.

Thanks for your advice all. I think I'll try the soundcloud route for starters.
Then have to try to record something; is there a record number of takes to beat?
And then learn about Martin's widget .................
When it doesn't work I'll be back for help again!
I fear the old Joni line 'I really don't know clouds at all' might be appropriate
