Hi guys totally new to all this so sorry in advance just bought a used guitar with nut missing my question is how do i know what size nut i need to replace it?

Hi George - just welcomed you over in the Intros section, good to see you diving in!
If it's a recent-ish mass produced guitar you may be able to source the correct sized nut via the manufacturer/distributor/dealer. It will still nedd some fettling though, and setting the string height can be tricky if you haven't done it before.
Often easier to begin with a "blank" (obtainable via web) and saw/file/sand it to length, breadth, contour etc then file the string slots. There's lots of info on the web about how to do this, and it's a lot easier than you might think if you have any kind of facility with tools.
But, before getting into all that, what make/model is the guitar?

Be very careful with nuts. Unless you are good the cutting of the string slots and getting them right can become a nightmare - I know from experience Phil
