Walnut and Sinker Redwood sounds cool and would look amazing I bet...
What style are you playing and what does Roger recommend? When I had my Alex made Roger suggested mahogany and cedar as being better for getting a warm sound from a light touch so that's what I went for...

In order for us to offer honest, impartial and constructive advice, I think we need to see pics of the Alexander first - though personally I would say go for the one that costs the most!
And welcome to the forum :-)

Spruce/rosewood just works Have you considered a single malt? They're certainly very unique.

How do Alan,
Nice dilemma to have! I'm in the happy position of having two guitars built for me by Rory Dowling of Taran Guitars. There is a, fairly lengthy (!), thread in the 'Builds' section which goes into a little more detail but…
I went for Cocobolo and Adirondak on one and Malaysian Blackwood and Italian Spruce on the other. Coco is a rosewood and more readily available than Brazilian and Malaysian BW is an Ebony. I'd tried these woods on other guitars of Rory's so, for me, the choice was an easy one.
It's entirely a personal thing. Ideally, you'd play Ariels made of the wood combinations you're interested in and, hopefully, solve the problem…
My tuppence worth… Rosewood/Spruce. (Heard great things about Madagascan Rosewood, for example, but I'm inclined to think it depends who you speak to. You know what they say about opinions…!)
Enjoy the sleepless nights.
All the best,
Alasdair.

Hello alan and welcome to the Forum. Great first post! I have a cedar/rosewood Alexander which is a delight, as is your cedar/walnut one I'm sure. Would love to hear more about your Alex some time - you can find out about mine on page 4 in the Reviews section if you like. I have an Ariel also, cedar/mahogany. My choice from your options for an Ariel size and shape would definitely be the redwood/walnut option, but that might not be the sound/feel you are after. What sort of use do you anticipate for your Ariel? Did you visit the Fylde workshop before ordering your Alex? I'd definitely suggest you go to check out different materials on an Ariel body - if you give Roger enough notice I'm sure he could get three or four Ariels together in different wood combos for you to try. I'd certainly recommend trying a standard Ariel, which has to be a bargain at £1k less than the potential cost you mention for your custom, and would give you a benchmark for comparison with other wood combos. Keith
