He was one of my heroes and certainly had a huge impact on folk music in America.

Indeed. Some great songs, political action ...protest at its best.

He was 94, but the loss of an artist as great as Pete still comes as something of a shock, He was a man with the inner strength to keep a firm grip on his principles despite America's blind and often violent opposition to the left, at the same time as being possessed of natural musicianship and a deep and immediately perceptible warmth. Whilst offering interpretations of material drawn from the furthest reaches of folk music, American and otherwise, he was an eco-warror before it became fashionable and helped to teach many of us to play banjo with his excellent tutor book, the Play In A Day of the banjo world.
I suggest a tribute project, even if such can barely hope to represent a superb songwriter and composer who also covered material by everyone from Leadbelly to Bach. I'd break the instruments out of the wardrobe for that.

Sad. He made an immense contribution. Great summing up by walkingdecay, and another +1 for a Project - apart from anything else it'll be good to give your wardrobe a break Pete! Keith.

Funny isn't it. You are often not surprised when somebody of this age dies! But somehow, I have never thought of Pete Seeger dying! I guess he never will.
I took some real pleasure in hearing his death headline the Today programme News this morning, commemorating the life of this radical, leftie. One in the eye for the Tories!

It is indeed very sad news . My introduction into the name Pete Seegar was quite a few years ago when i heard a story about a song that Woodie Guthrie wrote but never ever put music to it . Eventually the lyric was given to a young Seegar and he finished the song off . A few years ago when Billy Bragg was doing his mermaid avenue thing he performed a song live called deportee about a group of Mexican migrant workers in California , working there legally until all the fruit was picked . then bundled onto a plane and cast out as illegal immigrants . Sadly the plane caught fire and all perished . These words and the song stayed with me and i often listen to it . So that was how i got into the life work off Seegar , Through a song Guthrie wrote but he finished .
