Last year I produced a podcast/review of my Headway preamp. This got quite a lot of feedback, mainly I think because Headway are getting better known in the USA. Towards the end of last year the range was revamped. The dual channel EDB-1 has now been replaced with the EDB-2 and a new mini preamp, the EDB-1, has been introduced.
I've just upgraded my preamp to the new EDB-2 and Headway have kindly lent me the new mini EDB-1 to review as well.
I hope to get these reviews up this week as I'm having a pretty lazy week. If anyone has any particular questions they want covered let me know!
The bigger unit is now about £250 — a serious investment for a serious product. The new mini is selling for £150 just a little above the price of the Fishman Pro EQ but with seemingly better build and features. The mini is smaller than a BOSS pedal but built like a tank. If all you need is a mono jack plug input this could be very interesting. The mini accepts phantom power from a mixer and I guess will be as popular with gigging musicians (as they can add it to their rigs) as well as with open mic players who need something they can operate quickly and easily.
The larger EDB-2 unit has improved circuitry all round (difficult to see how it could sound much better) and also now allows you to apply both EQ and Notch filters on either channel or on the combination of both. While quite an advanced beast I've always found I can set this up in about 10-15 minutes. I think the new EQ features might allow for some interesting recording options which I'll test as well.
The replacement Headway amps are also making their way to market and should be here just before or just at the beginning of the summer. The new amp is rated at 250w and described as ultra compact with 'exceptional' sound; should be very interesting.
There is also a new magnetic sound hole pickup about to arrive which they are also excited about.
I'll let you know as soon as these are ready.
