I think I've mentioned on the forum my intention of having a second acoustic guitar to allow me one in standard and one in open/altered tuning.
I was not going to buy unplayed as it's an acoustic and after quite a number of tests, I found myself in possession of a second Tanglewood - my TW45 now has a little brother.
They are both cedar top which is maybe not a coincidence as I do seem to often prefer the sound where cedar is involved rather than spruce.
There are at least a few differences : TW45 is 650mm scale, super folk size (close to OOO/OM). TW73 is 628mm scale, parlour size. The shorter scale suits me fine - I've always preferred the shorter scale on electrics too.
The TW73 has a slotted headstock. Although both are solid cedar tops with mahogany back and sides the back on the TW73 is solid mahogany - maybe explains why such a smaller guitar is only 0.5lbs lighter at 5lbs. Both are 43mm which suits my knackered and fairly small, thin fingers. Both are one piece volute mahogany necks.
On the basis of sound being worth many words I have a couple of soundclips. The first has a one take 3 minute reprise of "Em maybe knows" which I posted here (played on my TW45) recently and it then has an extended improv, which was supposed to be DADGAD tuning, but due to my lack of attention was actually in DADGGD - it worked out better for an improv as it's a better open chord to revolve around - it's a long improv (and therefore an mp3 upload) so you're best to cut it short but it gives an idea of tone / sound fairly quickly! I liked the sounds with this tuning - may be worth a more detailed look later.
Test Run 1 TW73
The second is very short wav file. It is DADGAD this time. It has the starting kernel of possible ideas for a composition and is very tentative and also highly unfinished after only a day of trying to compose something! This ended up more classical sounding than I'd intended. Slightly hymn like in one or two chords perhaps. But I'd like to try and manage a 100% composed DADGAD before moving on to csus2 or similar.
Peace for them at last (very early draft)
I've had the TW73 nearly two days now, and it's hardly been put down.
A few more pictures of the TW73. Not a spectacular looker but more than made up for by how easy she is to play and how comfortable too.
Anyway - must log off and get back to more playing.
