Hi all, I'm putting a marker down for this as I want to write a review as I work through my current pack (the E Pack) and then subsequent ones if/when I buy them. I'm a good guitarist but improvising fingerstyle blues is certainly an area where I'm lacking. My aim is to improve this by working through Tobys' lessons which he aims to teach you both how to play his arrangements but also how to come up with your own versions, or at least your own licks and fills. I want to be able to take a song and arrange it myself, Tobys' lessons don't promise that you can do this but I think they will give me a solid grounding. So, I'll have a general post that I update for this pack as I work through it, another post for the next pack and so on. Smaller comments that could relate to all the packs I'll just post as and when. Can't put a time-frame on this I'm afraid, I have limited guitar time and I don't know how long it'll take but I'll try and keep updates regularly. If anyone else has done any of his lessons please add reviews, thoughts and comments in here. Hopefully it can become a bit of a resource for anyone who is thinking of giving them a go. First things first: www.littletobywalker.com/You can get much better and more comprehensive info from his site, I'll just say Toby is a blues/ragtime guitarist who is very active on a certain acoustic forum. His lessons always get a lot of praise and he is very well regarded as a teacher. With this in mind I decided to take the plunge, buy a pack and see what I thought for myself. I promise to be honest and will state I have no affiliation with Toby, although I've exchanged a few posts with him in another forum and will continue to do that.

The E Pack:I bought this pack while it was on sale after a discussion with Toby. I specifically wanted to learn to improvise fingerstyle blues, not just improve techniques, I discussed the fact that I'm a fairly accomplished guitarist, can improvise freely on electric and this is what he suggested I start with. It cost me $10.95, or about £7 in our money. That probably wouldn't even get you 15 minutes tuition with a local guy, let alone someone of Tobys' caliber. Here is a link to the packs on his website: www.littletobywalker.com/the-packs.html...More to follow...

Great post clydesllde, I will follow this with interest. I have the `C Pack` by Toby Walker, i found it to be really useful. What i like about the lessons in the pack, is the variations within each song that you learn. The different licks and phrases, along with the emphasis on using your own ideas as well. Most lessons just teach a song without the extras that Toby gives you. They must be the best value lessons out there.

I'm sure that, at $29.95 they're still a bargain ... but knowing that someone's paid less than half that ... LOL

I'm sure that, at $29.95 they're still a bargain ... but knowing that someone's paid less than half that ... LOL Yeah, I was glad I got it at that price. To be fair I would have paid the $30 and I've already had $30 worth from it and I'm only on the first example. E Pack ContinuedSo I realised I can't edit my first post, I'll add updates with a nice big heading so they will be easy to find. A little more background. If you give me a tab, chances are I could play most things, but my technique is rooted in classical/folk guitar playing. This is important as you will see... The first lesson starts off with Toby discussing the caged system, then specifically the e-box, how it works and an example 12 bar blues. He does not discuss independent thumb technique in this lesson (so far) and this is the underpinning of country/fingerstyle blues. I believe it is in his earlier lessons if you need help with it. I am playing through the first lesson and will continue doing it until I don't have to think about my thumb as this is a very strange technique to me. I was aware I would have to do this and become comfortable with it but I think it is worth highlighting. Toby has already started discussing improvising and tells you to try and come up with your own licks around the blues he gives you. This is what I wanted from the lessons so I'm very happy this has begun early. Toby is a very good teacher, he's clear and slow when discussing things and pointing out what you should be doing. So far I feel I've already got my moneys worth and would have even if I'd payed $30, but this may be because I'm starting from pretty much the beginning with this style and having a simple blues which sounds good and is explained is really helping me get my thumb working. One thing he doesn't really explain is notes he is using that aren't in the box shape. He says he is using them and why but it's not clear why they work if you don't know your scales. I suppose in the end it doesn't matter, as long as you know what works and what doesn't, but it would be helpful. As a guide there are 14 tabs in this lesson (some relate to the same piece but different sections) and two and a half hours of video which you can obviously watch several times. This is a much larger amount of material than I was expecting.

Seems like a very good investment. I like the sound of how this material is structured. I've found the best blues teachers are very keen that you develop your own ideas. Which made learning blues much more involving and creative as far as I'm concerned and really turned playing guitar into a passion rather than a minor hobby. I did take a lot of classical lessons several years back from a teacher who was very much in the school of everything should be played "precisely" as written - and I ended up overdosed on that level of strict control and gave up playing classical completely - the freedom of blues after that was a revelation. That this freedom could extend to any note outside the box and outside the scale being playable as a passing note took some getting used to. You remind me that I'm supposed to be looking at getting to grips with fingerstyle blues on acoustic guitar, but I've got distracted with celtic guitar and mandolin stuff and altered tunings and slide. I'm using JamPlay for my lessons and the wide choice of types of lessons and teachers makes it way too easy to be distracted. There's not enough hours in the day! To be honest I'm finding blues on the acoustic rather tough - the lack of bends and not being able to use the more pronounced vibrato that I've got used to with electric blues and the extra resistance from the strings on my fingers is all a bit discouraging. Makes being distracted just that bit easier. I'll be interested to hear how this E-pack goes for you. Look forward to hearing more. Mark

Hi Clyde - Toby Walker here. First off, may I say thank you for the review. I try to present these lessons in the most complete and comprehensible way possible, and I'm glad to see that they are working out for you. In regards to the extra notes that I use in one of the boxes in the E Pack, I believe I mentioned that these notes are in addition to the E minor Pentatonic Scale, which I included in a diagram - E, G, A, B, and D. The extra notes, such as F#, G#, and Bb, were explained as 'color' notes, which when added to the scale in a melodic way, can enhance one's solos. Thanks again for you review and continued success with your playing. Stay Tuned and Play Nice, Toby Walker Toby Walker's Website.
