I've just lost a lengthy post which I can't face typing out again yet, but I have this simple enquiry too:
I've just removed the pickguard from my Sigma 000M15. The tanline is either practically invisible thankfully or I think will be after the Summer if not sooner. I haven't quite got all the adhesive off yet and have read that 'naptha' is the thing to use. It sometimes gets called lighter fluid but especially as a non-smoke I don't know if that means any lighter fluid or whether I'll have to track down naptha (can't see it on eBay as such).
Can anyone point me in the right direction or maybe otherwise suggest what to use, something safe on the finish. It's a mahogany guitar with a satin finish.
If things don't work out I'll get another pickguard but hopefully I won't have to as the guitar looks better and possibly sounds a bit brighter, plus cutting the rosette edge of the guard is a bit hit and miss and a pain. (If a luthier is reading and cuts them (tortoise shell effect only, not black) from scratch according to soundhole/rosette diameter a price is welcome.)
Thanks.

You can pick up lighter fluid from a newsagent, ensure you ask for fluid or they may give you the nozzle one. There are also some adhesive removal wipes you can buy, I have used these to remove a sticker off a pickguard but should be okay on wood: Mykal Sticky Stuff

Methylated spirit from a hardware shop would be my choice.

Whatever solvent you choose, test it first, (maybe on the back of the head) to make sure that you don't damage the finish on the front. Cheers Gary

If I'd never done anything dumber I'd have kept that under my hat. I'll see what I can find tomorrow. Thanks. (I've been holed up at home for two days expecting a TNT courier to take a guitar for repair and it didn't turn up either day would you believe. Amazing.)

There's me thinking naptha might be a very obscure thing but whether all lighter fluid is naptha it has at least turned out it's the basis of your basic pound shop lighter fluid. It's done a lovely job when I'd been thinking I might have to get a new pickguard and faff with making the edge fit the rosette. The symmetrical look the guitar now has, and uninterrupted mahogany, does look better. Whatever the science is regarding the value of bone, on this guitar at least a new Tusq saddle and Corian nut has made the guitar more lively and I've set it up, relief, saddle and nut slot height, to suit me rather than making the best of the quite botched factory variables. I hope it's some years before I make another nut though - it took three goes over two days...
