Redwood and Cocobolo! I hope that you're wearing a dust mask Donal! How do you find the StewMac Dremel jig? Cheers Gary I don't understand this comment in the slightest bit, but it's an example of this forum at it's best. (I love you [crazy] luthiers, I don't understand what you do and why do what you do, but I love what luthiers do, it allows me to hear my dreams)

Yep, you'r right we're crazy!! Cheers Gary

We used a drill press fly cutter in the Lutherie School for rosettes so using the StewMac jig was another first for me. You might notice in the photo that it actually marked the top. Thankfully I wasn’t at my final thickness and it sanded out ok.

Donal,
Cocobolo is well know by guitar makers as a wood that provokes allegic reactions. Pau Ferro is another - my friend Colin Symonds ended up at his local Hospital A&E (remember them) as a result. Once you are sensitised that's it - the slightest exposure to the dust and the reaction kicks in. You may have one Cocobolo guitar in you or a thousand - each persons level before sensitivity is different. A number of builders - Stefan Sobell and Kathy Wingert for example - will/can no longer handle Cocobolo.
Good progress so far on your guitar.

I remember reading Stefan’s blog post about Cocobolo a few years ago. Sam Irwin (my tutor) was the same. He worked with it for years and then suddenly took a severe allergic reaction to it.

Great stuff Donal,
Glad you'll be back on the job soon - as it were....
What're your feelings about Redwood as a sound board?

It's not as stiff as spruce so I've left it a wee bit thicker. It actually works very like Cedar. I'm looking forward to getting this one finished.

Interesting linings! Cheers Gary Hi Gary, It's A4 liner from Kevin Ryan in California. I use his Zipflex product for my rosettes and I thought I'd give the linings a try. More info on them here.

However, I also read somewhere that Sinker Redwood absorbs minerals from river water and becomes much stiffer...? It also develops the attractive streaking. You heard/read anything about this? Best wishes, Alasdair.

The silt and minerals certainly give Sinker Redwood its unique colour streaking, whether it makes the board stiffer I'm not sure. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on some Sinker to compare. I'm pretty sure the harvest of Sinker Redwood from waters in California has been stopped so its getting harder to find.

Hmm. I was chatting to a bloke at 'Redwood Salvage Sales in California, a company who I understood recovered Redwood from a river. email is redwoodsalvagesales.com. They have supplied wood to Petros Guitars - there's an example on their website, looks beautiful.
Have a look.
How's the workshop/business?
Alasdair.

By the way, just noticed the linings. What's that?! Looks corrugated.
Ah, forget the foregoing - just noticed your earlier post...
