Hmm. I was chatting to a bloke at 'Redwood Salvage Sales in California, a company who I understood recovered Redwood from a river. email is redwoodsalvagesales.com. They have supplied wood to Petros Guitars - there's an example on their website, looks beautiful. Have a look. How's the workshop/business? Alasdair. Interesting, I'll have a look at their site. My understanding was that you weren't allowed to dig for it but whatever floats free after storms etc is available to be recovered. It's going well Alasdair. I've decided to pretty much focus on guitar building full time for the next while and see what happens. Cheers, Donal

With this guitar currently being lacquered, I'll have to get this build thread up to date. Below are pictures of work on the neck.

Donal, how did you find working with the Redwood? I've heard like Cedar it's a very easy wood to dent etc whilst working. The picture of the multi layer laminate neck (I love laminate necks), pre carving looks tasty! Not sure why, but I'm growing to find a good neck joint appealing like the sight of a packet of bacon (one day it will make a fine guitar/bacon sandwich - with a pint they are the fine things in life). Are you sending the guitar to someone else to be finished? Great looking set of Cocobolo too, straight grain quartered examples like that are quite rare.

It is like Cedar and perhaps easier to make a mess of if you’re not careful. I kept it covered in cardboard most of the time and it seem to do the trick.
I love laminate necks myself (and bacon sandwiches). As well as the obvious structural benefits, they look great. The guitar is being sprayed in the Avalon Guitar factory and I’m rubbing it down myself between coats. The Cocobolo looks great under lacquer.

So this one’s finally finished folks and I genuinely couldn’t be more pleased with how it has turned out. Firstly, here are the specifications: Soundboard: Californian Redwood Back & Sides: Cocobolo Neck: Honduras Mahogany, Sycamore & Ebony Fingerboard: Ebony Fretwire: EVO Gold Bridge: Ebony Bindings: Ebony with Black & White Purflings Rosette: Select Green Abalone with Ebony Head facing: Ebony (Front and Back) Logo: Green Ripple Abalone Finish: Satin (Melamine Lacquer) Tuners: Handcrafted Keith Robson Open Gear Strings: Elixir Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze Light (12-53) Case: Hiscox Pro II Scale Length: 648mm Nut width: 44mm Saddle String Spacing: 56mm Max Body depth: 110mm Body Length: 492mm Upper Bout width: 294mm Lower Bout width: 396mm Pics: It’s a really loud guitar with unbelievable power and projection. Really well balanced with a full clear bass, excellent clarity and sustain. It also has a real quickness of sound that I’m really pleased with. I’m reluctant to record this with my iPhone but I’ll definitely get some sound samples up this week. I’ve got a pretty good player lined up for some proper recordings. I’m also hoping to get some professional photography so I’ll post the results of that too. Thanks for looking folks. Donal

You keep carrying on the good work, Donal!
Really interested to hear how the Redwood sounds on the Coco.
Really glad you're pleased.
Alasdair.

Lovely guitar, redwood is one of my favourite topwoods to use, fits nicely between WRC and the spruces. In fact going to use it on my next steel string. Not the easiest wood to work, but you did a great job.
