In Leo's post about visiting to collect his and his niece's guitar-bouzoukis on Friday he alluded to a "mystery instrument" Well now I can reveal it: "Cailin Beag" which is Gaelic for "Little Girl" is a 375mm scale length Concert sized ukulele essentially made with the bits left over from making "An Féa Caol". It has a Western Red Cedar top with figured Pear back, sides and neck; Bog Oak bindings, fretboard, headstock veneers, end graft, heel cap, bridge nut and saddle; black/pear/black purflings. Gotoh Planetary Geared Ukulele tuners with black buttons, Gold Evo fretwire and Aquila nylgut strings. Here's my version of Clive James & Pete Atkin's "Beware of the Beautiful Stranger" played on "Cailin Beag" in cGEA tuning. I'll post it on "The Plucky Duck" too with more information about the song.

And a lovely instrument it is, too. As soon as Dave introduced us she just felt 'right' in my hamfisted mitts - the extra scale length over a soprano made her much easier for me to play and she has a really sweet sound (as davewhite has demonstrated here). Build quality is, as would be expected, top notch with no rough edges or sharp frets. Unless Dave keeps her for himself, there's going to be an extremely happy ukulele player somewhere...

Very pretty indeed. Is the bog oak saddle an experiment you're likely to try on a steel stringed instrument?

Very nice Dave, I'm surprised you found a dry patch of grass to lay it on!

And, how do you get the srings through the bridge? Keith - thanks. The strings are threaded through the holes in the bridge from the top, fished out of the soundhole and then have a bead crimp and bead threaded on and the string end tied in a double surgeon's knot. The bead seats against the bridgeplate. Uke strings rarely need changing and this system works well.

Keith, Glyn and Clydeside - thanks. Very pretty indeed. Is the bog oak saddle an experiment you're likely to try on a steel stringed instrument? Joe, The All English Walnut guitar I made for Bernd has a Bog Oak bridge - works very well.
