As I tentatively edge towards breaking my duck at the revered Plucky Duck, an old man's thoughts turn to the new-fangled inter-web music sharing sites. I am sure that the young people (and ocarolan and Martin) know all about these but there seem be several options and I find it hard to penetrate the legalise and tech-speak. I shall never be a prolific user nor do I have any commercial aspirations whatsoever. My audience will be limited to t' Plucky Duck and a few chums. Ease of use is critical and, as I live in Yorkshire, "free" is good. I am very interested in the experiences of others and should be very grateful for any advice on the pros and cons of the main options. Thanks. Brian

I use soundclick (free and handy for MP3s), Soundcloud (also free and handy for Wav files, and has a widget for posting to the forum) and I also have a bandcamp account - but can't remember why I also have a Box account - but that doesn't let me post lyrics so I don't use it as much. Now, man up and post summat brianr2

I use box and soundclick as well, but soundcloud is also easy to use and has a handy widget allowing you to embed your recordings on the forum so no one has to leave here to listen to them. It's like Hotel California here

I'm a bit daunted by it all as well brianr2. I've tried Dropbox and Box, but they have a storage limit and I've no idea why the links seem to stop working after a while. I've decided to go for Youtube in future, as there's no storage limit. I've experimented with previously posted items, and found it a frustrating faff. You have to be in the right frame of mind to navigate it for the first time. You can select privacy settings to choose who can view, or you could do it by disguising the title so that it won't come up when people search.

I tried YouTube once but it took about an hour to upload a two minuet tune . Plus you get all the numptys commenting on it some times YouTube is just an avenue for idiots to start an argument .

I've used Box, Soundclick and Soundcloud.
I've found Box is pretty straightforward for a basic link.
Soundclick has some added possibilities of posting descriptions and an appropriate photo.
Soundcloud has two problems for me. It is too easy to get sucked into the followers and followed routines and I end up spending far too much time responding to comments and listening to other members of the clouds work and leaving comments for them - leaving no time for playing. Also if your output gets a bit prolific you rapidly run out of free upload level and have to pay to add more recordings.
I've also tried youTube a few times but like Sigmadel I've found the upload time is horrendous and the wrestling with getting the video onto computer and teh sound synched up properly irritated me massively. The whole exercise seemed to mean a couple of hours to get a few minutes on the site. Thankfully there's an option to screen viewers comments before they go public, or just disabling them. The massive size of videos doesn't half fill up disk space on the PC.

Thanks everyone. I shall try Box to start with and if I don't get on with that I shall have a go with Soundcloud (which seems to offer more functions but my ambitions are very, very limited).
The prospect of video on You tube is too horrible to contemplate, both for me and for you!
