I came across a South African (I think) guitarist by the name of Derek Gripper, who plays arrangements of African instruments including the chora on the guitar.
I've heard one of his albums, and some of his music sounds very familiar but fresh at the same time.

Very nice indeed earwighoney. If his other stuff is as good as this, I'll definitely be tempted to buy a CD.

I have just retumed from a drive through rain-soaked North Yorkshire countryside listening to the rhythms of arid Mail. This transformed a tedious errand into an uplifting delight. Feed your soul; buy THIS CD.Brian

If it's of any use to any one, I think he uses the tuning of D A D F? B E for most if not all the pieces he plays.
Pleased you like his album brianr2. There's a lot of joy in his playing which and I hope he continues the theme of interpreting compositions of other West African musicians.

He does indeed play in this tuning, according material on his website, which is well worth a visit HERE It is possible to buy downloads of scores and learning materials. His music is way beyond my competence but I might try to stretch myself: it would be such a delight even to come anywhere close. Thanks again for highlighting this marvellous performer. Brian

He seems a good guy too... (taken from his website) www.derekgripper.com/pay-what-you-want-why/"I have also encouraged people to copy the album and give it to friends. If everyone gave it to three friends that would be fabulous. They can always come and pay me sometime. I’ll make it as easy to do this as possible. A digital sound file is of no value and costs very little to create. The music is of immense value to those who love it, and of little or no value to those who don’t (and everything in between). I don’t know where you fall on the graph of high value to no value. You do. If you take it for free, come back and pay once you have decided where you stand."
