Despite the middling weather today was a good day! Have been looking for something hog along the lines of a D18 for a while now. Gave Robbie a call at lunchtime to sort out meeting up and watching his gig tomorrow and he mentioned Oasis had just got a 2nd hand D18 in, so I decided to go down and have look. For a Saturday it was surprisingly quiet and there was only Howard working in the shop. I'd been there about 5mins and who should walk in but Gordon Giltrap who's playing a gig in Poole tonight. Howard made me a cuppa tea and I chatted to Gordon Giltrap while I tried the D18 along with a few other interesting things. Gordon played a few guitars as well, we were both blown away by the huge and sweet sound that came out of the Atkin L1 they have in. Anyway after a pleasant hour or so chatting with Howard and Gordon both of whom are jolly nice chaps, I bought the D18 and came away a very happy bunny . I really like Days that aren't planned and just sort of happen like that. Very pleased with the D18 which is one of the newer models with ebony fingerboard and bridge, it's only a year old

Congrats! But you must realise that we're going to need pics and preferably some soundclips as your penance Peter! Keith

What a fortuitous event! And you can now say that you have a guitar that's been played by GG But, y'know, pictures or it didn't happen

Superb stuff! I really fancy trying one of the newer D18s. Sounds like you might have gotten a nice deal there

I'm not very good with pictures and soundclips but will try and see what I can do. Obviously pictures will only be of the guitar , Gordon's playing Poole tonight! (Have to admit the majority of my playing took place before he came in and had a twiddle on a few instruments, he's just a little bit better than me! But still a very down to earth amiable sort of chap) having got it back home and had a play have to say I'm mightily chuffed, it's seriously tonesville to my Liking, the action needs lowering a bit but there's tons of saddle available and the relief of the neck could come down a bit yet. As I said earlier. Today was a bl--dy good day

Nice story - I think the guitar may still be on the Oasis shop website if you are quick. Lovely guitar which seems a really good deal. Congratulations!!!

Thanks to you all for the congratulations, was out a lot of the weekend but got in tonight and just spent an hour and a half playing and exploring what sounds I can get out of it. To say I'm happy and pleased with it must be the understatement of the century. Huge sound and very loud compared to my Atkin which isnt quiet itself for an OM size (The people I'm lodging with who were in the lounge next to my bedroom commented they thought it sounded different to last week, really I said in what way different, well we thought you were sat next to us on the settee came the reply!....... Oops might have to watch that especially as I get carried away marvelling at how good my favorite riffs sound!)

Congrats on the new baby. You have a ball with it, my friend. Next time we're together (May 10th?) we'll A/B the D18 to my HD28. Interesting, I reckon.

Hi Paul yes hope to be there on the 10th, I might have restrung it by then, at the moment it seems to Have Elixir Polywebs on it which are starting to fray on the g string, have never used these before, you can see the coating on the bass strings. It's hard to tell if they are 12s or 12s with a heavy bottom because of the coating. The recommended strings are 13s martin lifespan sp but think I'll go with 12s or medium lights and something other than martin strings which I've not got on with when I tried them previously. Am hoping the Polywebs weren't on there to hide some horrible over brightness problem! If they were I'll just have to keep using those because it sounds great at the moment.

Wow ... SO much better than the average visit to a guitar shop! Many congratulations on the new purchase - to be that happy and pleased while also saying about the improvements you can still make ... shows what a great choice it was for you. Happy playing. Mark

Elixir 80/20. They're not too slack and don't seem to affect the volume at all (I had 12's on before). If you don't usually use coated strings, why don't you try some uncoated on the D18? Shouldn't take too long for the initial brightness to go. Certainly, fraying coated strings are in desperate need of change. I find it takes not too long after this for the intonation to go all to hell. And it looks so awful.

Well I put a set of trusty daddario ej16s on tonight which is what I mostly use these days, was very surprised to find it must have had 13s on previously and not 12s with 13 bottom, as all strings are noticeably lighter and thinner now, It still sounds bloody marvelous even if the bass has lost a very small amount of oomf, it's still very loud.
What's really surprising is I had no problem playing it with the mediums i.e. 13s on before, they felt a bit chunky on the bottom strings but didn't feel hard on the fingers at all, was even bending the b string a bit with no problems which is why I was convinced they had light tops. Compared to 12s on my Atkin the 13s felt just as easy to play and the 12s on the D 18 seem even easier. Think they are both 25.4" scale length and there's not a lot of difference in the action, can't fathom it out? I've heard people mention stuff like break angles etc altering how tight guitars feel and sort of understand the principle but can't see how it would make that much difference.
