Hi all... Just a thought - and a thread that I've 'borrowed' from a classical guitar forum site... What pieces of music (maybe not necessarily originally for guitar!) would you really wish to see arranged/published/tabbed out/transcribed for guitar, so that you could learn to play it? This isn't a precursor to a commercial enterprise or offer from me, by the way I was just interested to get other folks' views and 'wish lists', since I've spent most of this year having to laboriously transcribe all the Ralph Towner music I've really wanted to learn, which isn't available anywhere else in print... Maybe this could also turn into a bit of a discussion on the 'art' of transcribing, for those that do it, and some of the techniques we all use..?

Interesting topic I'm rubbish at transcribing, and way too lazy to work things out if I don't have to, so I'm guilty of scouring youtube for tips and of course tab sites for the notes The piece I'd love to see tabbed is 'Courting is a Pleasure' by Nic Jones. Some of his more popular stuff has been well covered, and there are many versions of a lot of his stuff available, but I've never found a good tab of this piece, which is a shame as I consider it one of his finest. Of course, it's far too difficult for me to decipher on my own

My ability at transcribing is non-existant: think English football, or on the other hand, perhaps best to forget. If one of the much more skilled Forum members could produce a tab, then I should be forever greatful. More tangibly, beer would be on offer at HB5. It is a pity that no-zone has published a collection of Nic Jones songs. I have found the odd the odd tune here and there, mostly in Mike Raven books. But it would be wonderful if tracks from, say, "Ballads and Songs" and "Penguins Eggs" could be brought together. This would surely be a commercial success. Brian

I am OK at working things out by ear, as long as they aren't too complicated, (if they are, I'm happy to give up and move on after a few attempts) but I'm rubbish at writing them down either in notation or tab. I can usually get there in the end if I push myself but it's a long slog. The timing is what gets me, as when I slow my playing down I don't play it the same and hence the relative timings of the different lines often changes. As a result, I very very rarely write anything down, and I tend to rely on memory (an increasingly poor strategy) and recordings of my playing, preferably video. I enjoy writing my own pieces, but don't literally write them down.
I don't attempt much in the way of other folks' fingerstyle pieces, though I have done some (by ear) which particularly appealed. I do enjoy arranging nice tunes from anywhere for fingerstyle guitar, especially ones that wouldn't be thought of as "guitar tunes", but again I don't write them down.
Actually, if I have written a piece out I tend to find it difficult to break away from the page to learn it properly. As a result, the playing tends to become stilted and the version doesn't evolve as quickly as pieces that exist largely in my head. This is not a criticism of written out pieces, just an admission of another of my failings!
So I have to say that there aren't any pieces I'd particularly like to see transcribed for guitar as I much prefer to work them out/arrange them myself, or admit defeat gracefully if I can't crack it!
Keith

Like Keith, I prefer to arrange a tune for myself, unless it's something set in stone, like particular Gershwin arrangements and Joplin rags on piano, or Chuck's licks in Johnny B. Goode. Those paradigms apart, I avoid listening to versions by other people when working on a piece as there's always a temptation to borrow.
Which is not to decry the importance of example. We're all the sum total of our influences and our moments of inspiration (plus, as John Hartford pointed out, our limitations). Among the first occasions when I sensed that I was in some way becoming a musician were those when I managed to work out pieces by artists I loved by ear, and I would have taken much longer to get so far without the models provided by notation and tab earlier on. I later had the advantage of working with a band that was often called upon to produce head arrangements, at best being handed faded xeroxed sheets for Bb instruments, with the chords penned in above the lyric and scrawled notes and stains left by previous users. That drove me to hit the books and delve deeper into the fundamentals of music, and eventually to recognise that things like scalewise and circle of fifths progressions are not only very common and recognisable but not as scary as they sound.

I'd like a fingerstyle version of Golden Brown by The Stranglers. Well, I know there are hundreds of versions out there already, but they're not as good as the one in my head.

Interesting topic, I used to transcribe lots of things for myself, which eventually morphed into arranging things myself, then composing....in effect the art of transcribing is a very useful way to learn about structure, harmony & melody and all the useful wee devices writers use to make music "work", and you get to learn some of you're favourite music to boot . This reminds me that I have a tune for both Paul Brett and Gordon Giltrap to finish off transcribing & typsetting by the weekend for the mag, better stop browsing and get on it

I like to come up with my own arrangements of tunes, and usually create tabs of it once its finished.
The ones I'd like (but probably not starve!) to see tabbed are the ones I arranged, never got round to writing the tab, and then forgot how my own arrangement went...

I cannot wait to give it a go. Thank you so much. Beer starvation is one of the most serious nutritional deficiencies there is. Of all the major food groups, beer meets the most key physical, intellectual and emotional. And as every wife know, "a" beer is not necessarily just one... Thanks again for your time, generosity and expertise. Brian
