Amazing they've become so high profile with something rather different. I believe they developed this style and honed it playing on the streets in Ireland. Very skilled, and very fun, and a lot of it is melodic too. I've seen Gabriela had to take a break in 2010 due to her style of playing making for an overworked right hand / arm / shoulder. I think I can see how! Nice to see some nylon string guitar work. Mark

Both Rodrigo and Gabriela play Yamaha NX series electro nylon string guitars exclusively. Rodrigo plays the slimmer neck NTX1200 and Gabriela plays the more traditional sized NCX2000 and NCX1200.

I can certainly see why she took time out - my first thought when I saw her playing on Glastonbury the other night was - "bloody hell, her hand must kill - maybe she blocks the pain out with several beverages"

I can certainly see why she took time out - my first thought when I saw her playing on Glastonbury the other night was - "bloody hell, her hand must kill - maybe she blocks the pain out with several beverages" I've just seen that their guitars are customised versions of the NTX-14 fret and NCX-12 fret. Apparently took Yamaha 8 years to get the development work to where it is now. It's particularly the electronics that are very heavily customised and very complex - each guitar, but particularly Gabrielas, has several transducers for different parts of the wood, and there is an internal processor in each guitar. Gabrielas playing style is quite severe on the internal electrics (as well as her hand!) and it's apparently not unusual that up to 3 of her guitars during a tour can wing their way back to Japan for repairs by Yamaha due to the internal computer breaking down under the strain!
