I hate 'em.
I've tried several ways now to get them halfway decent. Seems that I best get along with using ringfinger>middlefinger>forefinger. At least on the B and E strings.
Before I start to train this seriously: how do you play them ? Any idea what to take care of ?

It makes sense to use your ring finger if the first note is on the 1st string, then m on the second string and i also on second or third... if the notes ascend then the other way round. There is no fixed rule, whatever makes sense for the context avoiding awkward string crossing and uneven pressure (meaning don't integrate your thumb if you want the notes to sound the same volume).
Have fun.

jonnymosco, I use all three fingers on the same string to get fast (well, relatively fast) triplets for celtic stuff. I haven't reached the point where I'm ready to post a clip, but I'm working on it. michaelm, if I used a plec, this would probably be the slowest triplet in history

If, as I'm guessing you mean, the notes are three of the same note, for the treble strings I tend to use just one finger, either DUD or UDU depending on context for "Celtic" ornament type triplets - fingernails probably necessary though - not sure it would work with flesh or fingerpicks. If the notes are on the lower strings I'll sometimes use thumb DUD (thumbnail or thumbpick) or possibly thumb (down)- finger(up)- thumb (down).

Nails are not a problem, Keith. And you're right, I mean three of the same note. I tried to use just one finger, but that way I can't build up the speed I need.
I've a long way to go to master this technique.

In that case, just nails, not flesh and nails - like a tremolo. Flesh slows you down and momentarily dampens the note.

Ring, middle, index all on the same string. The advice I've heard is start slowly and build up speed but I think once you get to a certain point this becomes a single brushing gesture, rather than three separate strikes executed at speed.
Keith is completely wrong about DUD or UDU with a single finger.
All the best guitarists are wrong about something though!
Tony McManus apparently had a bionic thumb fitted which underlies most of his thumb triplet technique.

I do it index, middle and ring Bernd, which is the opposite of Tony McManus, but then I figured out how to do it listening to a CD before we had the luxury of youtube and things like that. Nails are an absolute must to get that crisp sound. Whatever way you choose, get it nailed on the top string first then try getting it clean on the inside strings, have fun it took me about 6 months, and I still haven't nailed the thumb triplets...

Mark does it really well that way round. In the classical world it's a/m/i, that works for me. I've just been playing Mark's arrangement of Iain McGee's Romanian Boots... triplets the wrong way round!! Okay, they're not triplets, but the principle is the same.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who struggles with 'Celtic triplets'.
There is a large and obvious one in the middle of Al Petteway's version of 'She moved through the fair', but it's on the D string and I found that using the thumb pick and a single finger in DUD (actually it's DUDU, because there's another note to finish the phrase) worked reasonably well.
This is fine for the bass notes, and I've got it to work on the G string, too, but the treble strings really require all finger nail.
Simon Fox has some exercises and advice about triplets on his now free DADGAD collection online. I worked on this for a while, but agree with the comment above that most of us would be looking at 6 months worth of fairly intensive practice.
And, yes, Tony McManus is a freak.

Thanks for all the input!
I guess I better concentrate on the trebble strings and go on with a-m-i .
The thumb has to wait. I've only been using a thumb pick for a couple of months and I'm not yet happy with the result. As soon as I've managed that I'll try my luck on thumb pick triplets.
