Hello Folks,
Recently I have been noticing flaws in my knowledge of music. I’ve been stuck as a guitarist, learning to play the pieces and that’s it, then off to a new tune. But when asked what was the Chord structure, bass line and melody. I’m stumped.
I have a little bit of knowledge in theory on how chords are formed (Just basic major, minors and the 7ths). How scales work.
This being in just standard tuning, I was bewildered when I tried to place theory on top of altered tunings.
Last week I decided I’ll go to the music store and ask for a Music Teacher who could teach me theory. Then I made the phone call and finally booked a one hour lesson.
So on Monday I met the teacher and found out he was a Jazz Guitarists, this is a style of playing I’ve never heard in person or looked into it. I roughly explained to him I want to build my foundation of knowledge in music not in any specific field just yet. We discussed about music and style but there were a few specific points he made which changed my view slightly:
There is no such thing as a wrong note, may sound strange but you could use those notes in a circumstance where it would work.
Viewing the guitar, as I was brought into TAB it has really boxed me in. The way I memorize and view playing is by shapes of the hand, where he views it as notes. Which is great. He proven this as I brought out a piece of music I play, I followed the tab he followed the Music Notation and he played the song differently to there the tone sounded better in his way of playing even though it was slightly more complex fingering.
Then he did an exercise where he played a 3 note melody and added chords to it. He played 5-10 different variations of each chord to find the sound which would work well for that melody.
We carried on talking to get a better understanding of what his views were and how they would work for my goals.
Eventually I left 2 hours later with a noggin full of information and still a lot of questions.
Now I have a lot of work to do but hopefully soon go for another lesson and get into the theory more.
Chris
